Sinners Is Already One Of The Must See Films Of The Year

One of the year’s biggest film releases has just hit cinemas: Sinners, directed by Black Panther and Creed director Ryan Coolger, stars Michael B Jordan in a dual role as a pair of twins returning home in the US South. The period drama is set in the 1930s, and follows the brothers as they discover that something evil and terrifying is waiting for them. With Hailee Steinfeld, Jack O’Connell and Wunmi Mosaku, the film is looking to be a hit- here’s all you need to know:
What is Sinners about?
Two brothers, Smoke and Stack, both lead troubled lives of crime, having become embroiled in gangs and violence. They decide that it’s time to head home, returning to their town somewhere deep in the American South, during a time of Jim Crow laws and racial discrimination. They’ve got plenty of money, wear sharp suits and now have ideas of restarting life anew, with plans to set up a music club and make a living from it. The blues played by Black musicians in the old American South is one of the key thematic elements of the film, and the brothers’ new music venture begins to take off as more and more patrons materialise. It also attracts the attention of one of their exes, Mary (played by Steinfeld), who re-enters their lives and seems to have more than meets the eye. Despite their desire to move away from a chaotic life of crime, Smoke and Stack can’t help but get into trouble.

While much of the film’s plot has been kept under wraps by Coolger, the trailers for Sinners have revealed that things take a supernatural turn for the twins, that it’s not just terrifying but deadly. Before the two know what’s hit them, they discover that their town is host to a group of vampires, who are quite literally out for blood. If you thought vampires have been a bit corny since the days of Twilight and True Blood, Sinners brings back the genre with terrifying style, and soon, Smoke and Stack are fighting for their lives. Along the way, they meet the young Sammie (played by Miles Caton), a talented musician with big dreams in music. Themes of race, Southern supernatural beliefs and blues music all meld into one very bombastic horror film that’s quite a ride.
What else do we know?
Sinners has received unanimous praise from critics and early audience reaction, with particular praise going to the direction and performances, and has cemented itself already as one of the must-see films of the year.
