Skinny Jeans Are Making A Comeback – 2 Editors Share Whether They’re Ready

Depending on how you feel about skinny jeans, they’re either promising or threatening a comeback. One look at the SS25 runways and it’s clear the divisive denim trend is set to re-enter the zeitgeist once more, but we can’t come to a unanimous decision at The Handbook HQ as to whether this is a good or bad thing. Here, two editors (both of whom remember wearing skinnies back in the noughties) share whether they’ll be sporting the trend this time around…

“I’m gonna sit this one out”
– Natasha, Digital Editor

When I was younger, I went through many ‘phases’. From side fringes and being a pescatarian to the six months when I was convinced I was going to gain a black belt in karate (spoiler: I didn’t). But that’s all these mini crushes were: phases. I’d put skinny jeans into this same category, albeit this obsession thrived in my wardrobe for many years.
At the time, I loved the slim denim fit and couldn’t imagine wearing a baggy wide-leg style. Since then, my personal style has become a lot more laid-back. Comfort is *high* on my priority list, and slouchy fits offer an expensive feel I’m quite partial to. That’s not to say others can’t have their fun – wear skinny jeans as much as your heart desires! – but I’m quite happy to keep them as a memory for now. Although I have held onto a pair, just in case I do another 180 on the matter…

“I’ve always been a fan”
– Robyn, Managing Director
It’ll no doubt be the Xenial in me but skinny jeans are my thing. What’s not to adore about a figure-hugging silhouette? Made a thousand times more wearable – since I first wore them in the early noughties tucked into UGGS (back when UGGS were impossible to get hold of) – by the genius invention of flexible denim.
Granted they’re not everyone’s cut – it’s fair to say they work best on the longer legged humans. But I adore the versatility of their styling. Sneakers, strappy sandals, pumps, loafers, moon boots, stiletto knee highs – they all work. Plus no other jean looks as polished / louche with a shirt or blazer.
I have the utmost respect for those who can don a pair of mum or horseshoe jeans – I feel utterly frumpy and ridiculous. Kudos to those who nail it!

The fact the skinnies are set to be one of 2025’s hottest trends fills me with abject joy. My staple Rails Larchmonts will be a priority wear and I’m looking forward to investing in new brands too – maybe even some colours or patterns to change things up for this revival/incarnation. Skinnies for the win!
