If you’re getting married any time soon, then Netflix’s new horror series may be one to skip: Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen follows a couple (played by Camila Morrone and Adam DiMarco) who are preparing for their wedding. What is Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen about?
Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen centres on Rachel (Morrone) and Nicky (DiMarco), both happily engaged and soon to be married. The story unfolds over the course of a week as the pair head to Nicky’s family holiday home for what should be one of the best times of their life. But Rachel begins to experience a growing sense of unease, however, as she spends more and more time with Nicky’s wealthy and definitely unsettling family in this secluded home in frosty surroundings. She’s described by Netflix as naturally superstitious and a little paranoid, getting the creeping feeling that something isn’t right with Nicky’s relatives.
The show isn’t just a straightforward relationship drama, either, as it seems there is indeed a series of eerie events and coincidences that are too hard for Rachel to ignore. Making the big step toward permanent commitment is daunting for anyone- but is there something more below the surface of their relationship? As both the series title and trailer suggest, their wedding, unfortunately, may well be doomed to fall apart.
Created by Haley Z. Boston, who acts as showrunner, the show blends grounded relationship drama with mounting horror and suspense: “I love horror. …I think horror allows you to explore taboo feelings and take all of these fears and give them some bite,” she said in an interview for Netflix’s Tudum.
Is there a trailer, and who else stars?
Netflix’s official trailer for the show leans more into mood rather than plot and feels almost melodramatic with ominous, slowed music as it opens with Nicky’s marriage proposal. There are some pretty obvious horror signs that things are wrong: dead animals, wilting plants, and a very grey atmosphere. There’s also a lot of dialogue about fate and soulmates spoken in a spooky way.
The big get for the show is Oscar winner Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Hateful Eight), who appears to be playing the matriarch of Nicky’s family. There’s also Silence of the Lambs star Ted Levine and Karla Crome (Murder) playing other members of the family.
