Rami Malek Stars In The Thrilling New Movie The Amateur
Oscar-winning actor Rami Malek made his name in the hit TV series Mr. Robot– and if you loved that show, the star’s latest film, The Amateur, looks to scratch that same itch.
Set for release in cinemas next month, it follows Charles Heller (Malek), a cryptographer in the CIA who seeks justice after his wife is killed in a terror attack, and his superiors show little interest in helping. Striking out on his own and with nothing to lose, he’ll travel across the world to find those responsible. Here’s all you need to know.
What is The Amateur about?
The upcoming film is based on the book of the same name by Robert Littell. Malek’s character, Charles Heller, works for the CIA, specialising in cryptography (which is securing and hiding information data from prying eyes, if you’re not brushed up on spy-tech terminology) to aid the world-famous agency in its operations. He works in a hidden away part of the CIA’s headquarters, helping to keep the country secure- but a sudden devastating turn of events rips apart his world. A terrorist attack occurs in London, and his wife is one of the unfortunate victims who loses their life. Charles is left both distraught and determined that those who committed the act are brought to justice, he appeals to higher-ups within the intelligence agency for help. But despite the vast resources at their disposal, a series of conflicting interests mean they refuse his request.
Undeterred, the grieving and vengeful cryptographer uses his smarts to his advantage and blackmails the agency into allowing him to be trained to go after the perpetrators himself. He has very few people left who he can trust, and due to his past in a desk-based computer role, he is told he won’t be able to become a trained operative. On a quest to find what he can about his wife’s death, Charles ends up travelling to London, Europe and beyond to find justice. His superiors start tracking him across the continent, but soon realise he won’t stop until he gets what he wants.
Who else stars, and is there a release date?
Malek isn’t the only big name in the cast: John Wick star Laurence Fishburne plays a fellow agency employee who offers advice to Charles, while new Lois Lane Rachel Brosnahan plays Charles’ wife. Also starring are Jon Bernthal (Daredevil), Michael Stuhlbarg (The Staircase), Julianne Nicholson (Mare of Easttown) and Holt McCallany (Mindhunter). The Amateur is set to release on 11th April.
