Noel Fielding Stars In New Highwayman Series, The Completely Made-Up Adventures Of Dick Turpin

Is 2024 the year of highwaymen?  Not only is Sally Wainwright’s new series Renegade Nell coming to our screens soon on Disney+, but The Completely Made-up Adventures of Dick Turpin starring Noel Fielding will be coming to Apple TV next month.

Fielding plays the legendary roguish outlaw, in a comedic mishmash take on the days of flintlocks and capes. Starring opposite him as his foil is Downton star Hugh Bonneville, a corrupt lawman who wants to bring him in. Intrigued? Here’s all we know so far:

What is The Completely Made-up Adventures of Dick Turpin about?

As you might gleam from the title, this isn’t meant to be a serious, po-faced take on the life of history’s most famous highwayman, and is instead a fun yet stylish take on the folk anti-hero. Noel Fielding might have been most visible in recent years as one of the presenters on Bake-Off, but he’s going back a bit closer to his Mighty Boosh roots with this new series.

This version, described as an “irreverent retelling set in the 18th century” doesn’t look far off from the original Turpin story: he’s charming, roguish and loves to show off (and also has perfect hair). It’ll see him set out on a series of adventures and absurd escapades as the rather reluctant leader of a band of outlaws who’re as keen on making cash as he is. Chasing him is Johnathan Wilde (Bonneville), a lawman who is a little too drunk on power and bent on finally capturing the sly Turpin.

Is there a trailer?

Apple TV+ recently dropped The Completely Made-up Adventures of Dick Turpin’s first trailer, and it opens with Dick addressing a crowd in a very Noel Fielding fashion: “I know what you’re thinking, who is this guy with the incredible cheekbones? Where does he get his hair done?” before proclaiming himself to one day be “the most famous highwayman in all of England.” “You are literally about to be hanged you idiot!” retorts a nobleman, as it’s revealed Dick is seconds from execution.

It continues with a montage of his robbing antics (that don’t always go well) and features some of the other famous faces in the cast- Greg Davies (Taskmaster) berates Dick for “prancing around in a funny shirt”, and Tamsin Greig (Sexy Beast) also pops up apparently as an aristocrat.

When does the series release?

The six-episode comedy series will be coming to Apple TV+ on 1st of March, with the first two episodes releasing simultaneously. You can watch the full trailer below.
