One of Netflix’s best (and most explosive) thrillers is back next month: The Diplomat, which returns for its third season, hits the streamer on 16th October. Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) will once again be navigating the intricacies of global geopolitics, and it looks like she’ll be on a collision course with the new US president, Grace Penn, played by Alison Janney (The Roses). Also returning is Rufus Sewell (Scoop) as Kate’s husband Hal. Here’s all you need to know:

What is The Diplomat Season 3 about, and what happened last time?

The Diplomat has always been a more London-based show, with Russell’s character Kate beginning the series as the new US ambassador to Britain. However, Season 3 looks like it’ll be spending more time in the American capital, following Grace Penny’s swearing in as the President. To know where we’re heading next, it’s necessary to get up to speed with where the last season left us: a secret conspiracy that loomed over the plot of those episodes was revealed to be coordinated by Grace herself.

Kate and Hal had already been looking into the conspiracy themselves, in the process clearing the name of UK Prime Minister Trowbridge (Rory Kinnear) of ordering a terror attack on a British navy ship. However, after several twists and turns, it would be revealed that then-Vice President Grace had devised the plan. After a rather wild explanation from Grace that the whole thing was a way to unify Scotland and the rest of the UK, in order to stop a potentially independent Scotland from closing down a strategic military base in the future (got all that?), the sitting president, Rayburn. (Better Call Saul’s Michael McKean) dies, apparently in shock at the reveal. Before you know it, Grace has ascended to the presidency.

Well, now what?

The woman she’s been investigating may now be in the Oval Office, but Kate still remains keen on the post of vice president, which she’s been eyeing for a while now. We don’t know if that’s actually what will end up happening, as odd a pairing as it would be, but Netflix and the series’ writers are keeping the possibility open, according to their news site Tudum. You can bet, of course, that Hal will remain close to his wife as all this unfolds.

Who’s in the cast?

Two notable newcomers include Bradley Whitford (The Handmaid’s Tale) in the role of Grace Penn’s husband, Todd, and Poldark star Aidan Turner, who’s set to play an as-of-yet unrevealed character.
