Prepare to return back to Panem in November 2023: The Hunger Games series is getting a new film in the form of a prequel. The new film will be titled The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songs and Snakes, which while something of a mouthful is the same name as the 2020 novel that was the first entry into the series since Mockingjay in 2010.

While not as high profile as the preceding trilogy (partly due to the pandemic hampering things), The Ballad of Songs and Snakes received good reviews from critics and further fleshed out The Hunger Games world. It’s set several decades before the original story of Katniss Everdeen, and focuses on a younger version of Coriolanus Snow, the future president of Panem and antagonist of the trilogy. Aged only 18, he’s a lot different to the person he would become, and he’ll be played by Tom Blyth in the film.

It's set several decades before the original story of Katniss Everdeen, and focuses on a younger version of Coriolanus Snow...

Snow comes from what was formerly a wealthy family with a proud history, but that reputation is in decline and threatens to be forgotten. He is assigned to mentor a tribute for the upcoming 10th Hunger Games, and is determined to succeed, since doing so would result in a monetary prize allowing him to attend university. The trainee in question is Lucy Gray Baird from the impoverished District 12, who comes to the rest of Panem’s attention when she defiantly sings during the reaping ceremony. Baird will be played by upcoming star West Side Story star Rachel Zegler.

As you might expect from this kind of story, Snow begins to develop feelings for Lucy Gray, and the two must navigate the treacherous world in which they live. Though filming has yet to begin on the upcoming film, its distrubutors Lionsgate have released a teaser trailer for the film, showing golden songbirds and snakes breaking free of snowy frost- asking the question of who is a songbird and who is a snake.

The film’s release date is still some while off, but it looks like there’ll be a pretty extensive marketing campaign, so you’ll likely find out more about what awaits in the months ahead. In the meantime, you can get excited by the teaser trailer above, and read the book yourself if you haven’t yet.
