Rebecca Hall, star of The Town and Godzilla vs. Kong, is set to star in an intriguing new BBC drama, and the broadcaster has revealed the first look photos and info before it arrives later this year. The Listeners adapts the novel by Jordan Tannahillaand follows Hall’s main character, Claire, who starts hearing a mysterious, unsettling humming sound, that no one else can hear. This hum begins to disrupt her life and relationships, and the series centers around her continuing journey to discover the truth and find the source. If you loved other compelling BBC dramas recently like The Gallows Pole and The Woman in the Wall, then The Listeners is for you.

What is The Listeners about?

Claire is a normal, average person with nothing particularly different about her. She’s a popular English teacher working at a school, and her life seems pretty uneventful- until she suddenly begins to hear a low hum in her ear, that persists and simply won’t go away. When she questions the other people in her life, like her husband Paul and daughter Ashley, she finds no one else is able to hear the noise, and Claire starts to become increasingly frustrated and isolated. She consults several doctors and therapists, but there doesn’t seem to be any medical reason for her peculiar new tradition. Just when she thinks she’s truly the only one, though, she discovers that one of the students in her class, Kyle (Ollie West), is also able to hear the hum, and this common ground allows them to strike up an unlikely new friendship.

What else do we know?

With the hum and its knock-on effects making life difficult for Claire and straining her relationship with both Paul and Ashley, she’s slowly isolated from both her family and those around her. Only Kyle, and a group of others in the area who also claim to hear the humming noise, can understand her and give her some solace. Two charismatic members of this unique group, Jo and Omar, are a couple who say that the noise is some kind of gift, with only a select “chosen few” able to hear it. What exactly this gift and being “chosen” means is unclear, and Claire is taken into an enigmatic world in which not everything may be as it seems.

Who else is in the cast, and is there a release date?

The series will also star Prasanna Puwanarajah (The Crown), Gayle Rankin (Perry Mason), Amr Waked (Ramy), Mia Tharia (Phoenix Rise) and Franc Ashman (Inside Man). The series has yet to receive a definite release date but will be arriving on BBC One and BBC iPlayer later in 2024.
