Ben Mendelson & Maisie Williams Lead Apple TV’s New Dior Drama, The New Look
Fashion makes for good drama: from the Lady Gaga starring House of Gucci that released a few years ago to recently announced biopics of Karl Lagerfeld and Kate Moss, the world of high fashion and its most famous faces is becoming a new genre of its own. Adding to this cohort is The New Look, an upcoming series that tells the story of Christian Dior in post-World War II Paris, as he creates a new fashion line that is dubbed “New Look”, and would become the foundation of the Dior fashion house. It’s set to arrive on Apple TV+ later this year.
What is The New Look about?
Darkest Hour and Rogue One star Ben Mendelsohn will be playing the central role of the legendary fashion designer, whose company Christian Dior SE will become one of the biggest fashion houses in the world and have a huge impact on women’s clothing. Dior had tried to keep the fashion industry going during the tumultuous and ruinous Second World War, and after the conflict ended founded his fashion house in post-war France.
The official Apple TV+ synopsis calls it an “emotionally thrilling series” that “reveals the shocking story” of how Dior navigated the war and its aftermath to kickstart modern fashion. Christian Dior however isn’t the only fashion icon to be featured- Coco Chanel (played by Juliette Binoche) and Cristobal Balenciaga will also appear in the series.
Who else stars?
Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams stars as Dior’s sister, Catherine, while John Malkovich will play couturier Lucien Lelong. The Newsroom star Emily Mortimer plays Eva Colozzi, and The Northman’s Claes Bang portrays Hans Von Dincklage.
Rounding out the star-studded cast meanwhile is Glenn Close, who’ll be appearing as Carmel Snow, who was the editor-in-chief of the US edition of Harper’s Bazaar at the time of the series.
What else do we know and when does the series release?
The New Look hasn’t yet gotten a full trailer from AppleTV+ just yet, but a few images from the series have been released, including a poster that shows Ben Mendelsohn looking very Daniel Day Lewis in Phantom Thread-ish, designing a dress on a mannequin.
There’s also a glimpse of Maisie Williams as Catherine, and you can expect plenty of lavish vintage fashion throughout. Apple is also working on a second season of the show, but for now, you can watch the first few episodes when The New Look begins on 14th February- a Valentine’s Day treat for fashion fans everywhere.
