The (Surprising) Top Summer Nail Trends To Try Now

22nd August 2022 | By Tamara Corin

Pared-back beauty is nothing new during the warmer months, yet nails have never really followed suit, with brighter, bolder, more playful shades favoured for the summer. Whilst bright pops of colour haven’t gone away for holiday mani / pedi’s, there’s a huge shift in people favouring a more natural look – nude, neutral, barely-there nails are championing this summer!

From classic nudes and shimmering neutrals, to glossy, polish-free nails – the natural summer nail trend comes in many iterations so there’s something to suit everyone. Here, nail guru Leighton Denny MBE reveals the top three unexpected yet chic trends that have turned summer nails topsy turvy…

Nude Nails

“The nude nail is reigning strong this summer,” claims Leighton, “it’s the go-to, classic shade for those who want a softer, more natural, sophisticated look. This summer is all about opting for neutral nude shades that replicate the beautiful colour of your natural nail to give that ‘your nails just better’ effect.” “For a barely-there, perfectly groomed nail effect try a milky nude, for a classic pink nude, try an understated sheer pink shade and for a warmer, richer, creamier nude try a velvety, dusky pink blush,” advises Leighton.

Glazed Doughnut Nails

If you haven’t heard of Hayley Bieber’s ‘glazed doughnut’ skin trending on social media, where have you been for the last few months? Now, Mrs Biebs have turned her attention to the ‘glazed doughnut’ manicure. “It’s the manicure to replicate this summer,” says Leighton. “A classic nude or milky white polish with a sheer, pearly, iridescent finish. It’s the perfect way to add some oomph and elevate a minimalist, neutral nail. If you’re used to being bolder with your summer nail shades, then the ‘glazed doughnut’ effect is the happy medium between experimental nails and neutral shades.”

Leighton strongly advises us to have a go, “this trend is so easy to replicate at home – simply layer a sheer, pearlescent polish over your favourite nude colour to transform it into a shimmering glazed shade.” Sounds easy enough!

The Anti-Mani, also known as the ‘Japanese Manicure’

There is “a huge rise in people going polish-free and instead showcasing the beauty of their naturally, nourished nails, which is why the ‘anti-mani’ or ‘Japanese Manicure’ is booming!” states Leighton. In basic terms, “the ‘Japanese Manicure’ is just a new name for a great deluxe natural manicure – keeping the nails healthy, nurturing the nail bed, using lots of deep moisturising ingredients, and buffing to a high gloss shine. It’s like a facial for your nails, to create a healthy, glossy, beautiful base.”
