Depending on if you follow the religious, Gregorian, Julian, or meteorological calendar, we’ve celebrated the first weekend of spring about 10 times already. But one thing is for certain; there’s been a slight uptick in the weather, hasn’t there? Our Weekend Guide is particularly spring-themed this time, from colourful exhibits and horticulture masterclasses in London, to live music and literary festivals.

Scroll on for what to book this weekend:

See a new exhibit at The Gagosian

The Gagosian is known for their provocative and forward-thinking exhibitions, and a visit to one of its galleries across the world is always sure to spark something you hadn’t quite thought of or felt before. This exhibition in their London space is all about German artist Albert Oehlen and follows a similar theme.

Oehlen’s paintings are ambiguous and distorted with vibrant colour palettes, deliberately meant to provoke contrasting interpretations. Back in the 90s he also ran his own label of experimental electronica, so expect motifs of music, as well as cinematography.

Switch off for Earth Hour

All across the world, lights are being turned off between 8:30 pm and 9:30 pm GMT on Saturday 23 March for Earth Hour, an initiative started by the WWF.

Just 60 minutes of freedom for electrical power makes a quite staggering difference, so there’s no excuse not to make dinner just a little early. Among the landmarks in London participating will be Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament.

Combine art and food at Ochre

The National Gallery is the ultimate free weekend activity in London for two reasons. Firstly, the art. But, almost as crucially, they also have great dining options.

This weekend try out our new favourite Ochre, perfect for an indulgent Sunday lunch following a stroll around the gallery. Food is served in their all-day dining bar and restaurant, which offers Hereford beef wellington every Sunday.

Get experimental at Raven Row

For unique, never-before-seen, and challenging exhibitions, checking what’s on in Raven Row should be your first point of action. Their new showcase, Some May Work as Symbols, takes a look at the contrasting artistic approaches in Brazil from between the 1950s and 70s.

Made in collaboration with the Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro, the exhibit reflects on absences or exclusions in Brazilian art historiography. Presenting work by thirty artists, much of which has never been seen in the UK before, this exhibition draws principally on collections from museums in Rio, São Paulo, and Bahia.

Start the spring celebrations in Falmouth

I don’t know about you, but my tolerance for winter ran out sometime around the first week of January, so to say I’m ready for Spring to start is an understatement.

To celebrate the arrival of springtime, Falmouth is putting on a Spring Flower Show this Saturday and Sunday. Dating back 110 years, this is the event we need right now.
