Looking for a new miniseries to add to your watchlist? Disney+ is set to release A Small Light, a biographical drama series set in WWII about the woman who sheltered Anne Frank’s family from the Nazis. Starring Bel Powley, Liev Schreiber, Jole Cole and Amira Casar, this one will be coming to the streaming giant on May 2nd.
Here’s everything you need to know about A Small Light
The series focuses on Miep Gies, a Dutch woman who worked for Jewish businessman Otto Frank after he moved to the Netherlands to escape the growing Nazi regime. Eventually, she was asked by Otto to help hide them after Germany invades and occupies the Netherlands. Despite the risks, she immediately agrees and devises a plan to conceal the family and several other Dutch Jews in the small space above Otto’s business premises.
Miep is played by Bel Powley in the new miniseries, who’s appeared in The Morning Show and The Diary of A Teenage Girl. Otto Frank is played by Ray Donovan star Liev Schreiber, and Miep’s devoted husband Jan, played by The Ipcress File’s Joe Cole.
While the series centres narratively around Miep Gies and her perspective, Anne Frank and her experiences are a key aspect. As mentioned in Disney’s synopsis, “In the end, it was Miep who found Anne Frank’s diary and preserved it so that she and Otto could later share it with the world to ensure it served as a testament for generations to come.”
Anne herself is played by British actress Billie Boullet, who’s had a reoccurring role in the rebooted version of The Worst Witch, and will appear in Amazon’s dystopian drama The Power.
Anne’s mother Edith and sister Margot meanwhile are played by Amira Casar (Call Me By Your Name) and Ashley Brooke (White House Plumbers). Series creators Joan Rater and Tony Phelan, best known for their work on Grey’s Anatomy, said that they wanted to “show the importance of discovering untold stories of the Holocaust and the lessons it continues to teach.”
There’s no official trailer yet for the miniseries, but there is an “in production” video posted by National Geographic, who’s producing the series, which includes plenty of clips from the show and interviews with the cast.
