If there’s one genre we wish there was more of on TV, it’s dystopian thrillers: creepy visions of the future, gripping narrative and often insightful social commentary. Last year’s The Peripheral on Amazon helped fill the void left behind by Westworld, and the streaming service is serving up more thrilling goodness in March with its new TV series The Power.

Based on a 2016 novel of the same name, it’s set in a world where teenage girls suddenly develop the power to electrocute people at will, with world-changing consequences.

The Power has an impressive cast, led by The Staircase and Knives Out star Toni Colette, who plays the mayor of Seattle Margot Cleary-Lopez in the series. A progressive politician, Margot has been passionately using her position to try and enact change in her community, and when the Power appears in the world, she suddenly finds herself able to achieve and influence more than she ever could have imagined. Her husband meanwhile is Rob, played by The Menu star John Leguizamo, and together they have three children, one of which is Jos, played by Auliʻi Cravalho (Moana, All Together Now).

The Power and its novel have multiple branching storylines that place around the world, as various figures deal with the very changed world that they now live in following the Power’s emergence. When the world’s population of teenage girls find that their power is inbuilt and can’t be taken away, they find that they can awaken the Power in older women too, leading to a world in which almost every woman can use it. Tunde, played by Toheeb Jimoh (Ted Lasso) is a Nigerian girl and aspiring journalist who documents the sudden development of the Power in women around her. Roxy (Ria Zimtrowicz) is the daughter of a London mob boss (played by Eddie Marsan), who witnesses her mother’s murder. Allie (Halle Bush) is a girl who is raped by her father before she kills him with her power and flees to a convent. All of these storylines chronicle how the Power has rapidly changed human society.

Other cast members meanwhile include Alice Eve (Star Trek: Into Darkness, Bombshell), Rob Delaney (Catastrophe, Deadpool 2), Edwina Findley (The Wire, Treme) and Josh Charles (The Good Wife, Sports Night). The first season is set to begin on 31st March, consisting of ten episodes.
