This is a rich season for bags, arguably the most exciting in years, largely because so many new creative directors debuted simultaneously. I’ve picked out my favourites and found the most affordable designer bags inspired by the catwalks…

Following a deep dive into the world of handbags, I’ve emerged, arms laden with the most on-trend totes. From slouchy, oversized shoppers to sleek east/west shoulder bags, these are the must-have accessories for SS26. I’ve highlighted the standout styles on the runways, but then found all the affordable luxury alternatives. So it’s over to you… Invest in an icon, or love a high-street or boutique-bought beauty?

Slouchy & ‘Lived In’

The real “It” bag this season is one that looks like it belongs to your life, not just your outfit. Bags across the collections arrived undone, with Miu Miu and Loewe leading the way with styles made from supple suede and textured leather. Silhouettes are softer, more worn-in, with big carry-alls looking both practical and effortlessly cool. Even Chanel, known for its pristine elegance, launched a beautifully large tote as part of Matthieu Blazy’s first collection with the fashion house.

Paris 64, Manhattan XL Cuero, £490

At last, an every day bag that looks achingly cool.

Woven & Artisanal Textures

Arguably one of the most culturally resonant stories of SS26, and Bottega Veneta sits at the heart of it. Under the new Creative Director, Louise Trotter, the house has brought back its signature Intrecciato technique, and we’ve all fallen back in love. From the sculptural Lauren 1980 Alto clutch to the Barbara, these woven beauties have sparked a revival and lust for more textured, artisanal totes. For more affordable price points, you’re spoilt for choice with numerous brands replicating this basket style. Consider Dragon Diffusion for another designer take, or Charles & Keith for the boutique vibe.

East/West Bag

Demellier, The New York Shoulder, £395

If you’re after an era-defining bag, I believe this is it. When it debuted in SS24, the Alaïa Le Teckel kickstarted the modern revival of the elongated silhouette. It, in fact, caused a frenzy. What followed was a wave of interpretations across the entire industry. Alaïa itself has continued to evolve, launching its latest east/west offering, Le Click.

Now the Y2K-inspired shoulder bag has infiltrated the whole fashion market. Some may argue that this is less a trend, more a style classic. Seeing the quality of designs, I would agree. From H&M to & Other Stories, Flattered to Mango – all iterations look impeccable.

Suede Fringe

On the runway, Acne Studios, Stella McCartney, Burberry, and Alexander McQueen all showcased fringed bags to the max. However, the Valentino Garavani Nellcôte is one of the standout pieces driving the suede fringe bag conversation for SS26. Its matte, tactile finish is giving fringe detailing a softer, more luxurious feel than leather alone, and I’m here for that. But the high street has us covered with cascades of flowing fringe, with the likes of Whistles and Zara embracing the trend with statement suede as a key part of its SS26 drop.

Moon or Hobo Bag

Saint Laurent’s Mombasa bag has made one of SS26’s most talked-about comebacks, marking the first major archival revival under Anthony Vaccarello’s creative direction. Originally designed by Tom Ford in 2001, the Mombasa helped define a new era for the house and is doing so once again. Its now iconic curved shape has inspired numerous iterations, not to mention highlighted the renaissance of many archival and Y2K styles.
