If you’re looking for a thrilling new drama to sink into, ITV has them in spades, with recently released shows like Litvinenko and A Spy Among Friends and upcoming series like Delia Balmer. The broadcaster’s recently announced After The Flood will be joining those ranks and looks to be our newest bingeing obsession when it arrives on ITV1 and ITVX. A mystery drama, it centres around an apparently strange death in a town that’s just been hit by a huge and devastating flood.

Written by BAFTA nominated writer Mick Ford, who’s written for Stay Close, The Stranger and Ashes to Ashes, After the Flood focuses on PC Joanna Marshall (Sophie Rundle), who’s involved in the recovery effort following a catastrophic flood. During the clean-up and rescue operations, the body of an unidentified man is found in a lift in a submerged underground car park. The police investigators come to the conclusion that he must have become trapped as the waters rose and were unable to escape. Joanna however becomes obsessed with learning more about him, and what exactly occurred. Nobody seems to know who the dead man is, and no one has any idea how he ended up in a lift.

Rundle, who’s known for her roles in Peaky Blinders and Gentleman Jack, is joined in the cast by Phillip Gleinster (Life on Mars) playing Jack Radcliffe, a property developer, and Lorraine Ashbourne (Bridgerton) appearing as Joanna’s mother Molly. As the impact of the floods takes hold, they threaten to expose certain secrets within the small town, with ITV’s synopsis reading: “Fortunes and reputations are at stake… …how far will people go to protect themselves?” Some of these residents who might not be as they seem include Lee, played by Jonas Armstrong (The Bay), Sarah Mackie, played by Jacqueline Boatswain (Anansi Boys), Sgt Phil Mackie, played by Nicholas Greaves (The Crown) and Matt Stokoe (Cursed) as Joanna’s husband Pat.

The show will pointedly incorporate themes of and commentary on climate change and its effects on our planet, with the synopsis continuing: “the mystery unfolds across the series while we also see the real impact of climate change on the lives of residents in this small town.” ITV has not yet announced a release date yet, but with filming beginning this month, it’s likely the series’ six episodes will air later in the year.
