What do you get if you put two of Hollywood’s brightest rising stars together in a sundrenched will-they-won’t-they rom-com? You get 2023’s highly anticipated Anyone But You, pairing Euphoria and Reality star Sydney Sweeney with Top Gun Maverick’s Glen Powell. Bea (Sweeney) and Ben (Powell) both seem to have hit it off after a magnetic first date, but their attraction begins to turn sour. Rather than becoming the perfect couple, both end up despising each other and going their separate ways, but their paths unexpectedly cross again when they’re both invited to a wedding in Sydney.

What is Anyone But You About?

Directed by Will Gluck (Easy A, Friends With Benefits), Anyone But You takes the classic romantic plot of a couple that apparently can’t stand each other and modernises it for the 2020s. Bea and Ben met back in their college years and were immediately attracted to one another, having a perfect first date and amazing chemistry. But something went wrong, and instead of hitting it off, the two end up putting as much distance between each other as possible. Years later, both are mutually horrified to find that the other is also a guest at a friend’s wedding in Australia. Worse, they’re both single and for their own personal reasons, they decide to pair up as a fake couple for the occasion. They grit their teeth and bare it, trying to put on as convincing a display as possible- but do they truly hate each other, or is there something else underneath?
We don’t know much about our two leads beyond that synopsis, though we get a glimpse of their distaste for one another in the teaser trailer (with Sweeney’s Bea literally hitting Ben in the groin at one point). Glen Powell described Bea as “a nightmare” and Sydney Sweeney describes Ben as “an asshole”, so it’s clear neither is much of a saint. There’s also a look in the trailer at the idyllic sun and sea of Sydney, promising a particularly dreamy backdrop to the romantic antics.

‌Who else stars, and is there a trailer?

‌The rest of the cast, meanwhile, features Alexandra Shipp (tick, tick… BOOM!) GaTa (Good Mourning), Hadley Robinson (Little Women), Michelle Hurd (Star Trek: Picard), Dermot Mulroney (Scream VI) and Rachel Griffiths (Hacksaw Ridge).

Is there a release date?

Anyone But You is set to hit cinemas this December (an exact date for the UK has yet to be confirmed), so it’s an ideal escape from the cold and the rain.
