Ballet trainers have hit the mainstream thanks to big-name designers like Simone Rocha and Miu Miu. Celebs (hello Bella Hadid and Julia Roberts) and content creators everywhere are wearing, but I’m very much on the fence. Can I be convinced?

I’m going to be brutally honest here. My first thought was – ‘ugly’. But I must have been missing something, as global searches for ballet-inspired sneakers have rocketed – according to search trend data. We are in a full-scale sneakerina movement. Simone Rocha is cited as the originator of said trend back in SS21, but the hybrid design has since appeared at Louis Vuitton, Prada and Miu Miu, pairing delicate straps and rounded toes with practical soles. I mean, marrying pretty design with functionality. I can see the appeal.

The Miu Miu Plume Satin Sneaker is the gold standard, but it’s the actual sports brands that have seen an opportunity and (excuse the pun) run with it. Adidas brought us the Taekwondo Mei, while Puma’s Speedcat Ballerina has exploded in popularity. And yet, I’m still not on board.

It was only when mid-range fashion labels began to serve up their own that I felt the pull. Ganni, the cornerstone to all things cool, created its Sporty Ballerina in leopard, polka dot and denim. Okay, I’m tempted. Then, one of my high street faves, Cos, released its suede-and-nylon ballet trainers in a rich shade of bordeaux. I headed in-store to give them a try. And let me tell you, if a trend is not for me, I will let it pass me by. (Note my previous pill box hat wearing – not for me.)

I slipped them on, surprised at the comfort. Snapped a few pics, as you do. Then I totally surprised myself. I loved them. Loved them so much that I bought them 20 minutes later. Yes, I have been influenced.

Finally, ballet trainers that I can get on board with. Cos, you’ve won me over.
