There’s a striking new accessory making the rounds, and it’s dividing opinions. With its vintage vibes and sleek social-media inspo, the pillbox hat has become the latest look to dominate our feeds. But just how wearable is it? I thought I’d give it a trial run.

As a huge fan of retro styles, I couldn’t help but be seduced by this trending accessory. Once big in the 1930s and again in the ’60s, notably worn by Jackie Kennedy, it has recently made a chic comeback. Spotted on the most fashionable, I wondered if I could pull it off in my day-to-day.

Scrolling through social media, I’m loving the minimalist styling content creators have adopted. In most cases, fits feature tailoring and luxe knitwear. This is something I could certainly work with.

Stylish on Insta, but does a pillbox hat translate to everyday reality?

Shopping around, there are many vintage iterations, but you know they’re of-the-moment when some of the best high-street stores are stocking pillbox hats. I popped to H&M for mine. Pairing it with a soft brown suit and printed loafers, I made the hat more contemporary and definitely more me.

However, following an ‘oh, this is cool‘ moment, the family mocked my new accessory. My husband asked why I was wearing a fez. My neighbour drove past, bemused by my latest foray into extreme headwear. So, while I’m all for stepping out of my style comfort zone, sadly (or thankfully…) my pillbox hat is not ready for my day-to-day world. I won’t be wearing it on the school run, shopping trips or even to work meetings. This controversial beauty will be reserved for Insta and fashion-friendly appearances… so I’m keeping it, just don’t tell my fam.
