Pounding the pavements in high summer can be a sweltering affair. While others are lounging by a pool, you’re surrounded by high rises, but with the perfect summer dress, you can still look totally fabulous.

Wherever you may be, in my case London, summer in the city can be less than ideal. From crammed, sticky trains to sweaty shops, it can feel like a lot. So wearing fashion that feels good, looks impressive and hits that mark of sleek summer style, is all kinds of important. I’m talking easy pieces that require little thought, but still pack a punch.

Shorts are definitely an option, offering that balance of smart and casual. However, for that one-hit wonder, summer city dresses are the way forward. Offering just the right amount of coverage for days in the office, yet playful enough for cocktails by the Thames or al fresco dining on one of the many tree-lined streets, throwing on a simple frock wins every time.

And yes, the stores are packed with pretty sun dresses, but wade past those, and you’ll discover so many options that aren’t too holiday or too wedding guest, but just right for summer in the city.

As always, Mango is my fail-safe. From fabric to fit, this high-street brand gets it right every time. Other labels nailing their new season fashion are Nobody’s Child, & Other Stories, and Abercrombie. I mean, the retail temptation is huge.

If you’re office-bound and looking for something that’s both warm-weather friendly and respectable, Reiss, Aligne, and Me+Em are your best bets. All offer collections that look refined yet still feel so very fashion, even when those rays are hitting hard.
