If Harry Styles loves them, then we do too. Embrace homespun style in the latest drop of fashion knits.

Autumn is here, and who doesn’t love snuggling into the softest of cardigans? Thought so. When it comes to knitwear, the humble cardi has become a true favourite thanks to its comfort and, of course, style appeal. And yes, there will be those still questioning the frump factor, but stop the doubting and start styling, because thanks to a) designers (cult brand Khaite, Miu Miu, Gucci) making them fabulous, b) a new appreciation for handcraft skills and c) a desire for lifelong pieces, the cardigan is most definitely not going anywhere fast and is 100% not frumpy. For extra warmth, pair with a duvet coat – still one of the most fashionable coat options to buy now.

Pre-pandemic the unexpected trend began to rumble, but then as lockdown hit there was a surge in home crafting and would you believe, people began to knit their own. A-list celebs, influencers and musicians all started knitting, propelling home knit kit sites into the Instagram stratosphere. Check out We Are Knitters and Wool and The Gang to join the crew.

And then there was Harry. The man of the moment appeared on stage in JW Anderson’s multi-coloured patchwork cardigan and earlier this year saw him on the front cover of Rolling Stone in a cable knit Marni cardi. I mean, the guy loves his knitwear.

Now, we may not be about to knit our own or go full-on colour explosion a la Harry Styles, but we know where to seek out our faves for a fresh AW22 feel. From understated tones – think classy creams, rust and beige – to bolder shades, the high street has you covered, but don’t forget to shop small. Independent labels like & Daughter, The Knotty Ones and L’envers focus on sustainability and designing for longevity. These are the pieces you will love for life, not just for a season.

Are you ready to choose yours?
