Culprits Is The New Disney+ Thriller To Binge
Fancy a new crime drama to binge? Disney+, which already has whodunnit A Murder At The End of the World and thriller Playdate on their way to our screens, is working on a new heist series. Culprits, starring Gemma Arterton, has all the ingredients for a new hit.
The Funny Woman star plays Dianne, a member of a gang of elite criminals who’ve just pulled off a particularly high-stakes heist. Alongside Arterton will be Nathan Stewart-Jarrett (Candyman) and Suzy Eddie Izzard (Doctor Jekyll), with the thriller set to arrive on the streaming service later this year.
What is Culprits about?
The series is based on the non-fiction book The Anthology Culprits by Richard Brewer and Gary Phillips and will be an eight-part miniseries. The series takes a “darkly funny” approach, while still being a thrilling bit of TV.
In shades of Reservoir Dogs, it takes place in the aftermath of an audacious heist, following the gang of criminals as a feeling of paranoia descends on the group. Each member has decided to hang up their gear and go their own separate ways, looking to leave the life of crime firmly in the past and finally move on. But of course, it’s not quite that simple: suddenly, gang members find themselves being assassinated one by one. Who is behind the killings and why?
The assailant seems to be a professional and has intimate knowledge of who each member is and how to find them. So are they a traitor within the organisation or someone from the outside with a grudge to bear?
Who is in the cast?
As the bodies begin to pile up, suspicions and paranoia are rife. Dianne (Arterton) is one of the main protagonists. While we don’t know much about her character yet, she certainly looks like she could be ruthless in a pinch, with her character wearing pristine white gloves and clutching a gun.
Stewart-Jarrett meanwhile plays our other main character, Joe, who’s also seen in the first-look images. Suzy Eddie Izzard’s character is unnamed but appears to have long grey hair and glasses, while we also get a look at Kirby Howell-Baptiste (Cruella)’s also unannounced character.
The rest of the cast includes Niamh Algar (The Wonder), Kamel El Basha (Room 207), Tara Abboud (Rebel), Ned Dennehy (Good Omens) and Kevin Vidal (The Parting Glass).
Is there a release date?
We don’t know exactly when Culprits is releasing, but the eight-part miniseries will be coming to Disney+ in the UK and Starz in the US. It’s on track to be released later this year.
