A new trailer for Christoper Nolan’s sprawling epic, The Odyssey, has just dropped, and there is a lot to unpack. Drawing inspiration from Homer’s foundational myth, the visionary director appears to be crafting his most ambitious project yet. Featuring a powerhouse ensemble including Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, and Tom Holland, we dive into the details of the trailer that has everyone talking.

What the trailer tells us

Beyond the sheer magnetism of its A-list ensemble, the trailer offers a breathtaking window into Nolan’s visceral reimagining of Ancient Greece. The cinematography and visuals already look stunning, featuring sprawling oceanic landscapes and epic battle scenes. The plot will follow Matt Damon, who is taking on the titular role of Odysseus, King of Ithaca, as he heads home from the Trojan War to rescue his wife and son. This marks Nolan’s first major project since the meteoric success of Oppenheimer in 2023, so the stakes are high, yet if this first look is any indication, The Odyssey promises to exceed expectations.

The cast

As is often the case with Nolan’s projects, it appears this script was one of the most coveted and sought-after in Hollywood, with an impressive list of names attached to the film. Matt Damon will be joined by Anne Hathaway, who will be trading the halls of Runway Magazine for a wildly different setting. She will be playing Odysseus’s wife Penelope, the Queen of Ithaca, while Tom Holland will be stepping into the role of his son, Prince Telemachus.

Robert Pattinson also featured heavily in the trailer released by Universal Studios yesterday. He is set to portray the antagonist, Antinous, who has his eyes fixed firmly on the queen while her husband is still away. Pattinson’s The Drama co-star, Zendaya, will be joining the cast too, playing Athena, though she remained absent from the recent trailer.

The names don’t end there, with Charlize Theron (Apex), Benny Safdie (Uncut Gems), Mia Goth (MaXXXine), and John Leguizamo (Romeo + Juliet) all set to star.
