If mind-bending sci-fi thrillers are your thing, then you’ll be pleased to know that Apple TV+’s underrated Dark Matter is returning for a second season. Based on Blake Crouch’s bestselling and acclaimed novel, the first season, if you’re unfamiliar, delved into the head-spinning concept of the multiverse and different realities shaped by different choices.
Joel Edgerton (Train Dreams) and Jennifer Connelly (Top Gun Maverick) play a husband and wife who are unwittingly pulled into alternate realities. Here is everything you need to know:
What is Dark Matter Season 2 about?
Season two picks up in the aftermath of the first season’s final episodes, after physicist Jason Dessen (Joel Edgerton) finally managed to reunite with his wife Daniela (Jennifer Connelly) and son Charlie following his extraordinary journey across countless parallel universes. Having escaped the disturbing plans of an alternate version of himself who pursued him, Jason is determined to leave the chaos of the multiverse behind and rebuild his family life. But as the Dessens settle down and all seems to be returning to normal, things are upended yet again.
Jason and Daniela may think that they’ve outrun the danger, but unfortunately for them, getting tangled in the multiverse tends to lead to unforeseen consequences. According to creator Blake Crouch, season two tells an entirely new original story that moves beyond the events of his 2016 novel, further opening up the world (or worlds) of the series. Jason is still obsessed with the Box, the device that allows travel to different realities, and Daniela is growing increasingly paranoid. Meanwhile, two friends of Jason, Amanda and Ryan, are desperate to find their way home from the dizzying multiverse. The long-running theme of the series continues into Season 2: what would the world be like if we’d made different choices at pivotal moments?

Apple TV+ has so far only released a first look image of the new series with Edgerton and Connelly in action, but you can expect plenty more promo material and a trailer in the coming weeks, with Season 2 set to drop next month.

When does it release?
Dark Matter season two premieres globally on Apple TV+ on 28 August 2026. The 10-episode season begins with one episode on launch day, with the rest released weekly through to the finale in late October.
