It’s always exciting to discover a new foreign language TV drama- and Netflix’s new series I’m Not Afraid is just such a show. Set to release this July, it follows a young boy who makes a frightening discovery, taking him on a coming-of-age journey that changes his life. If you’re as intrigued as we are, read on for everything you need to know.

What is I’m Not Afraid About?

I’m Not Afraid seems to be deliberately timed, in that it’s set during the 1986 World Cup in Mexico- one of the co-hosts of the current tournament. It follows ten-year-old Miguel, a curious boy growing up in an isolated village in Veracruz. Like most kids his age, Miguel spends his days exploring the countryside with his friends, unaware that the quiet rural community around him is hiding a disturbing secret.

Everything changes for him when Miguel stumbles across a deep hole in a remote field and discovers another young boy trapped inside, shocking him. The frightened child, Felipe, initially mistakes Miguel for a ghost, but the pair soon begin forming a bond and a friendship. Before long however, Miguel realises Felipe didn’t randomly end up down that hole- and that he has actually been kidnapped.

Miguel’s secret visits to his new friend help him to gradually piece together clues about who might be responsible for the bizarre and disturbing situation. The deeper he investigates, the more he begins suspecting that the adults around him he has trusted all his life may know far more than they’re willing to admit. His carefree, unassuming childhood begins to slip away, replaced with a cautious need to find out what really happened to a boy just like him.

The series is actually based on the similarly named novel I’m Not Scared by Italian writer Niccolò Ammaniti, which became a bestseller and had a well received English translation. Netflix’s version changes the setting from 1970s Italy to 80s Mexico, and features similar themes of trust and loss of innocence.

What else do we know, and is there a release date?

Netflix’s drama has an all-Mexican cast, including Luis Alberti, Fátima Molina, Yoshira Escárrega, Fernando Cuautle. I’m Not Afraid premieres globally on Netflix on 8 July 2026, consisting of eight episodes.
