Master of dark fantasy, Guillermo del Toro, returns with his adaptation of the original horror novel: Frankenstein, which releases later this month. Starring Jacob Elordi as the Creature, and Oscar Isaac as his creator Victor Frankenstein, this is a retelling of the classic story, and follows the brilliant scientist as he seeks to create a living creature- even if it could all go wrong. Here’s everything we know so far:

What is Frankenstein about?

Everyone knows roughly what Frankenstein is about, even if they’ve not read the novel: a scientist decides to create a human out of body parts and resulting in a “monster”, and of course, that Frankenstein is the scientist, not the monster. With so many film and stage adaptations over the years, del Toro aims to bring a faithful version of Mary Shelley’s pioneering novel to the screen, with his own unique twists. In this version, Jacob Elordi takes on the role of the Creature, who, after being assembled and then given life by his creator, is outcast for his frightening, nightmareish appearance. Oscar Isaac meanwhile is Victor Frankenstein himself, who turns on his own creation after seeing what he became and later fearing for his life when the Creature seeks revenge.

The official trailer shows both Elordi and Isaac in action, under del Toro’s idiosyncratic direction. The trailer is told from the Creature’s perspective, as he remembers fragments of the past and seeks to track down Frankenstein. Del Toro, who is a huge fan of Frankenstein, looks to give the classic story the justice it deserves and faithfully adapt the themes of a novel first published over 200 years ago. Despite Frankenstein being a horror film and a horror story, the director also has a philosophical view of it: “I think this is a family drama in many ways. It’s about the very Catholic notion of fathers and sons, and the pain that we transmit from one to the next generation,” he told Deadline.

What else do we know, and who else stars?

Elordi and Isaac aren’t the only big names in the cast: Mia Goth, star of Pearl and X, plays Elizabeth Lavensa, a woman Victor has feelings for, while Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained) plays Elizabeth’s uncle. Charles Dance (Game of Thrones) David Bradley (Harry Potter), Ralph Ineson (Fantastic Four) and Lars Mikkelsen (Sherlock) also star. The film is set for a cinema release on 17th October, and will later be available on Netflix.
