Ever wondered what it’s like to delve into the behind-the-scenes action at London Fashion Week? Now you can thanks to this brand new fashion photography exhibition landing in London this week on Thursday 15th September.

Hamiltons Gallery will be welcoming a series of work from British fashion photographer, Gavin Bond. In his first ever solo exhibition, ‘Gavin Bond: Being There’ takes a look back at his work during the 90s.

The exhibition, on display until 29th October, delves into the photographer’s archive. The collection was rediscovered by Bond during lockdown 2020 and will give fashion lovers a glimpse backstage at some of the 90’s most iconic fashion shows.

The extensive collection takes a look at Bond’s epic career, from his days as a young fashion student at the prestigious Central Saint Martins where he studied alongside notable alumni like John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney, Hussein Chalayan, Giles Deacon and Katie Grand. It’s here where he was given the opportunity to dive into London Fashion Week with his camera, getting access to the wild backstage world of fashion shows.

His work was quickly recognisable and garnered attention from the likes of key fashion editors, including Marion Hume of The Independent who commissioned his backstage shots for shows at Paris, Milan and London. John Wolford gave him the opportunity to shoot backstage at Vivienne Westwood’s iconic ‘Anglomania’ show in March 1993 and again in Westwood’s Spring 1994 ‘Cafe Society’ collection.

Bond’s work is simplistic, shooting quickly and unobtrusively using only available lighting, with this exhibition made up of a ‘grid’ featuring around 50 gelatin silver prints arranged to emulate the feeling of ‘being there’ backstage. The result is captivating, with blurs of ruffles and the buzz of the backstage coming centre focal points. Expect to see iconic fashion moments including shots of supermodels like Carla, Cindy, Christy, Claudia, Kate, Linda, Naomi and their memorable sisterhood.

This is the exhibition of the season for fashionistas looking to get a glimpse into the wild backstage facade.
