The Handbook
The Handbook

If your uni days involved nights out ending in a polystyrene boxes of chips, cheese and gravy, you’re going to love this. As much as our shameful 4am fast food habits are no more, there will always be a place in our heart for a box of filthy chips. We now call them “loaded fries” (much more acceptable) and London’s hippest junk food eateries are all over them.

From beef short rib chips topped with fresh kimchi, sour cream, jalapenos and salsa to halloumi fries bejewelled with pomegranate and mint (see, post, right?) these are the top five loaded fries dishes you need to try. If it’s kebab shop chips you’re after, however, we suggest going back to basics, uni-style – this is a pre-mixed curry sauce-free zone.

Crispy Lamb Fries at Dirty Bones

Forget a side of chips, make them the main event and order Dirty Bone’s Crispy Lamb Fries served with sweet miso, red chilli and jalapeño.

The junk food masters, who now have outposts in Kensington, Carnaby, Shoreditch, Soho and Oxford, know what they’re doing when it comes to the deep fried and the loaded, just make sure you make it a once in a while occurrence.

They also do a cracking cocktail and desserts to satisfy the sweet-toothed.

Cyprus Potato Chips at Oklava

When Nigella Lawson famously took to Twitter to claim these were her favourite chips, the world lost their sh*t. Well, we’re with you, Nigella.

Oklava’s Cyprus Potato Chips come topped with chilli salt, garlic and herb mayo. Pretty simple but utterly delicious.

Chilli Cheese Fries at MEATliquor

Fries don’t come much dirtier than this – MEATliquor’s come topped with beef chilli, cheddar, jalapeños and French mustard for an eye watering take on loaded chips.

If the Chilli Cheese Fries are a little hardcore, the burger joint has a range of loaded fries covering varying dirtiness, from the tame Hippie Fries – grilled onions and MEATliquor’s signature Hippie Sauce – to the vegan Green Chilli Cheese Fries, which are slathered in green chilli sauce to turn the heat up to 11.

Pair with MEATliquor’s famous hotdogs, burgers or vegan treats for some of the best junk food you’ll find in the capital.

Oli Baba’s

We’re not suggesting Oli Baba have reinvented the wheel but, actually, we kind of are. Taking the famous squeaky cheese, cutting it into fry-shaped pieces, deep-frying it and loading with natural yoghurt, pomegranate, sumac, coriander and chilli, Oli Baba have managed to take the rich, varied tastes of the Middle East and basically fry them into something deliciously British.

Jinjuu Carnitas Fries at Jinjuu Soho

Jinjuu’s modern take on Korean food offers colourful, healthy and seriously Instagrammable dishes such as bibimbap and poke bowls, but it’s their loaded fries, or Jinjuu Carnitas Fries, that are a must-try.

The Korean-Mexican mashup takes French fries and slathers then in cheddar, beef short rib, fresh kimchi, sour cream, jalapenos and salsa. We can see why they call them “disco fries” – they are guaranteed to make you do a little food dance.
