The Weekend Edit: 33 Grecian-Inspired Pieces We Love

20th April 2023 | By Ashling McCloy

As we countdown to summer there’s no surprise golden jewellery and shoulder-baring dresses have caught our attention, but more specifically the looks once worn by Ancient Greeks. The style is statement-worthy, yet ethereal and will instantly transport you to the azure blue seas of the Greek islands.

On a recent trip to Zara it was hard not to notice the nod to both Greek and Roman dress. From the coin belts and draped dresses to the more obvious Venus De Milo print tee, the high street favourite was most definitely preparing for the return of the goddess. Meanwhile on the catwalk, Giambattist Valli’s collection featured pieces trimmed with gilded braids, ruched skirts and tops. But most notable: the jewelled gladiator sandals. Thus cementing the return of the gladiator.

The Grecian or Roman look is powerful and yet beautifully feminine. Giambattist Valli’s SS23 collection, inspired by Roman aristocracy, emanates strength and allure. It also marks the return of gladiator sandals.

For something authentically Greek, it makes sense to appreciate the incredible contemporary talent from the country itself. Devotion Twins, a Greek family business run by designer Athina and her husband Dimitris, focuses on gorgeous natural fabrics, hand-embroidered details and traditional ethnic patterns. Similarly, Athens-based Pearl & Caviar was created to revive the craft of local artisans, while creating modern pieces using traditional patterns and elaborately hand-woven motifs.

So top up the tan, slip on the armour-like cuffs and step into a sweeping asymmetric gown. It’s time to say hello to your own version of Aphrodite… even if you’re just popping out to your local Greek for a little baklava.

At the heart of all Devotion Twins designs are embroidery and textile techniques that carry the rich folkloric heritage and its textile traditions combined with modern technology into the future. Beautiful, mostly handmade clothing completely designed and manufactured in Greece.
