Halloween is no longer just an excuse to buy a multipack of sweets and hope you have enough left for trick-or-treaters. London’s pastry chefs, restaurants and bars are getting involved with everything from ghost-shaped chocolates and sinister soft serves to spooky afternoon teas and cocktails. Whether you want something to take home or an excuse to dress up and make an afternoon of it, these are the Halloween treats worth seeking out this October.

Adam Handling Chocolate Shop

Adam Handling’s chocolate shop might have come up with the best trick-or-treat concept of the lot. Its Trick or Treat box contains four bonbons, but only three are treats; you won’t know which chocolate contains the trick until you bite into it. There’s also the Ghosted Marshmallow, a toasted marshmallow with lightly smoked brown butter ganache designed to taste like marshmallows cooked over a bonfire. Both are available to pre-order, with Halloween orders dispatched during the week commencing 26th October.

The Ivy Asia

Things are getting suitably dramatic at The Ivy Asia, which is transforming into the House of Spirits for Halloween week. Alongside the entertainment and late-night celebrations are two limited-edition additions worth ordering purely for how they look. The Skull & Bats dessert pairs black vanilla soft serve with milk chocolate and raspberry, while the bright green Jade Ghost mixes yuzu gin, Cointreau and Midori with lemon and hot honey syrup.

Biscuiteers

Few places do Halloween as well as Biscuiteers, and this year they are pulling out all the stops.

Perfect for gifting, the limited-edition range features hand-iced creations including haunted house biscuit tins, gingerbread skeletons, and detailed monster biscuits. Handcrafted in London, each sweet treat comes beautifully packaged in the brand’s iconic keepsake tins or illustrated gift boxes.

Harry’s

Harry’s is giving Halloween an Italian spin with a toadstool that thankfully contains considerably more white chocolate than mushroom. The Halloween Toadstool combines white chocolate, blackberries, iced vanilla parfait and pistachio biscotti crunch, with warm pistachio sauce poured alongside. At the bar, the Corvo di Milano brings together rum, Campari, pumpkin spices, lime, pineapple and mango. Both disappear again after 1st November.

The Ivy Collection

An enormous edible eyeball is about as close as we’d like to get to actual horror over dinner. The Ivy’s limited-edition Wicked Eye combines chocolate ice cream and dark chocolate mousse with honeycomb, pink angel hair and milk foam. There’s a cocktail version too, mixing vodka, honey aperitif, lemon, white chocolate and raspberry. For children, the restaurants are also holding a Little Monsters Breakfast Banquet over Halloween weekend, complete with treats, surprises and a Halloween toy.

Conrad London St. James

For little trick-or-treaters, Conrad London St. James is launching a special Halloween edition of its children’s MiniTEA. Wicked Treats runs throughout October and comes with Halloween cakes before finishing with a decorate-your-own dessert, complete with icing and toppings. Costumes are actively encouraged, so this is one occasion when turning up to afternoon tea dressed as a vampire is entirely acceptable.

144 On The Hill

Richmond Hill Hotel’s afternoon tea is getting a ghostly makeover for Halloween with its Haunted Treehouse Tea. Running from 24th October through to 1st November, it combines the usual finger sandwiches and pastries with a Halloween-inspired setting, making it a gentler way into spooky season for anyone whose tolerance for horror extends roughly as far as a themed éclair.

Le Cordon Bleu

Naturally, Le Cordon Bleu isn’t simply sticking a pair of sugar eyes onto a cupcake and calling it Halloween. Its pastry chefs are creating a limited-edition collection of spooky desserts as part of a special Halloween Afternoon Tea, putting a more polished spin on the season while showing off the pastry techniques the culinary school is known for.

The Montague on the Gardens

The Montague on the Gardens is giving afternoon tea a spooky makeover for Halloween, with seasonal treats and a themed cocktail served in its characterful Bloomsbury hotel. At £70 per person, it’s firmly on the grown-up end of Halloween celebrations: less trick-or-treating, more settling in for an afternoon of cakes and cocktails.

Alphabet

For something you can grab rather than book, Alphabet at Fulham Pier is leaning into autumn with pumpkin spice lattes and hot chocolates. A simple one, but ideal if your preferred Halloween treat comes warm, caffeinated and without an edible eyeball involved.
