When How To Kill Your Family first hit the shelves in 2021, it quickly established itself as a refreshing, albeit twisted, take on the revenge narrative with Mackie’s sharp wit and biting social commentary turning what could have been a straightforward tale of familial vengeance into a complex exploration of privilege, power, and the lengths to which one might go when they feel the system has failed them.
The protagonist, Grace Bernard, is not your typical anti-hero. She’s cold, calculating, and unapologetically brutal, yet readers find themselves rooting for her—or at least fascinated by her exploits. Mackie’s writing taps into a vein of dark humour that breaks away from more traditional narratives, and the book throws all kinds of surprises at you.
Who stars?
The protagonist is none other than Furiosa and The Queen’s Gambit star Anya Taylor-Joy, who told Netflix that she was thrilled to be bringing the story to life. “After some (light) stalking of the inimitable Bella Mackie, I could not be more thrilled to be collaborating with the team,” she said. Executive producers Sally Woodward Gentle, Lizzie Rusbridger, and Emma Moran are slated to be the ones bringing this project to life – and we can’t wait to see how this one turns out.
Moran also told Netflix that she was fascinated with the protagonist, describing her as the “kind of complicated, dark, but utterly hilarious antihero you dream of writing.”
