Botox is one of the most common procedures to reverse signs of aging. However, it doesn’t last forever, as it is naturally broken down by the body. The amount of time Botox lasts depends on the area you have it and the type of injectable. Because of this, it is recommended to get touch ups every 4 months. However, some tips can help you make the most of your Botox.

We caught up with top plastic surgeon Dr. Aydin Gozu, who’s practice is at The Clinic Center, and got his top tips on making the treatment last as long as possible.

1) Stop smoking

Smoking affects your lungs and brain, but it also has an impact on your skin too. Nicotine in particular narrows your blood vessels which means less moisture can access the skin. As you take a puff of your cigarette or vape, your lips create little fine lines, the more repetitive and mechanical the action, the more chance your lip filler will break down faster.

2) Keep hydrated

The benefits of Botox can be further extended if you stay hydrated. Hydration is key for overall health as it maintains a steady body temperature, helps to eliminate aging, and keeps your joints healthy and moving. Regular hydration will help your skin with cellular rejuvenation and cellular turnover, keeping it fresh and healthy.

3) Keep stress to a minimum

Stress is a common factor of our daily lives and is unavoidable. It can take place with your career, relationships, or finances. Stress negatively impacts your body in many ways. When it comes to our skin, high levels of stress releases cortisol and other hormones which accelerate the aging process. To extend the durability of your Botox, try to reduce unnecessary stress-inducers from your life and add in relief techniques such as yoga and meditation.

4) Avoid UV exposure

Being exposed to the sun’s UV rays can end up reversing the impact of your injectable treatment. It’s always important to practise sun protection, but even more so after a treatment. Apply a high-quality, broad-spectrum sunscreen and avoid the outdoors during peak sunshine hours when the UV is stronger. Opt for sunscreen which contains Vitamin C, this ingredient will avoid sun exposure. UV light can lead to inflammation and when your skin heals, your Botox will break down.

5) Use the right skincare

Your skincare routine is crucial when maintaining Botox. This is one of the most important steps in aftercare and extending the longevity of your injectables. If you keep your skin hydrated, it’ll reduce the need for frequent appointments. Use ingredients which support your skin’s moisture barrier and avoid dehydration. Think ceramides, hyaluronic acid and squalene.

6) Sleep carefully

To make your injectables last longer, you should sleep on your back. This is important because it gives your Botox a chance to settle into your muscles. If you lay directly on your face, this could prevent the injections from settling in and can impact your results.

7) Watch your diet

Your diet can directly impact the appearance and health of your skin. To maximise the results of your Botox, it is encouraged that patients avoid processed and packaged foods. It is also advised to limit the amount of sugar in your diet as it can cause inflammation.
