How To Stop Your Sunscreen And Makeup Pilling For Good

Pilling is annoying, but totally preventable. With a little patience and ingredient savvy, your routine can go from flake-fest to flawless. Because when your skin is smooth and pill-free, the glow really shows. Here’s what every beauty obsessive needs to know to master the art of layering.
The pilling problem
There are few things more infuriating than layering your skincare and makeup to perfection – serum, SPF, foundation, all gliding on like a dream… until they don’t. Enter those tiny, fuzzy bits that roll off your face mid-application and make you question every product in your arsenal, otherwise known as pilling.
So, why is your skin pilling?
According to Biossance Education Manager, Dan Perry, “it usually starts with formulations. For example, silicones, bulking agents, waxes, etc, create a desired consistency, but some of these ingredients don’t play nicely with one another, especially in quick succession. Friction builds, and that’s where the pilling starts.”
But ingredients are just part of the puzzle. Perry says it’s often down to poor timing and too many layers. “Even the best formulations can pill if you don’t allow time for absorption. It’s not about product loyalty—it’s about patience. Plus, the more steps you have in your skincare routine, the more ingredients you are mixing, and the more likely you are to get pilling.”

How to layer like a pro
1. Stick to light first, heavy last
Start with your thinnest, most water-based products and work your way up to thicker ones. Serums → moisturiser → sunscreen → makeup. Never the other way around.
2. Press, don’t rub
Gently pat or press each product into your skin to avoid disrupting the layers underneath. Perry agrees: “Think of applying sunscreen like laying down a veil, not kneading dough.”
3. Let it sink in
This one’s not optional. Dead skin is like Velcro for pilling. If your face hasn’t seen an AHA in a while, now’s the time. Two to three times a week is plenty—don’t go too hard, or you’ll just end up with a different issue (hello, irritation).
4. Choose the right SPF
Mineral sunscreens (especially zinc-based) are more likely to pill. Chemical or hybrid formulas tend to absorb better and are often designed to double as primers. Look for terms like “non-pilling,” “cosmetically elegant,” or “makeup-compatible” on the label. Don’t forget to exfoliate
Reapplying SPF without ruining your face
We all know we should reapply SPF every two hours. But who wants to redo their whole base at lunch? Not us! Use SPF powders, setting sprays, or mist formulas that sit lightly over makeup and don’t disturb your look.
Still pilling? Blame the combo
If you’re following all the rules and still pilling, it might be a formulation clash. “It’s often best to then stick to the same brand as the formulations are specifically made to mesh with one another,” says Perry. Patch test full routines before big events, and don’t be afraid to swap out one rogue product that’s causing chaos.
