Skincare layering allows you to optimise and customise your routine to suit your unique skin type and concerns. By layering products, you ensure your skin gets the best hydration, active ingredients (if you’re using them), and protection it needs. Think of it like how I use multiple machines and technologies during facials – combining different tools delivers better results. Similarly, layering skincare products enhances their effectiveness, promoting great skin health while maximising hydration and protection. It’s all about giving your skin exactly what it needs to thrive.

Layering skincare is suitable for all skin types; it’s just about adjusting the products to suit your specific needs. For oily skin, you might opt for lighter formulations and active ingredients that help balance oil production. If your skin is dehydrated, you’d focus on hydrating serums and nourishing products to restore moisture.

The key is tailoring the routine to your skin type

Is Every Layer Necessary?

Not necessarily. The ideal routine varies by skin type, lifestyle, and personal preferences. Here’s a quick guide:

Dry Skin: More hydration is better. Layers like essences and moisturisers are your holy grail.

Oily Skin: Streamline your routine with lightweight products that won’t clog pores.

Sensitive Skin: Minimal layers with gentle, soothing ingredients work best.

Normal Skin: Your routine can flex based on your skin’s needs.

Step 1: Cleanser – Start Fresh

A clean canvas is crucial. Begin with a gentle cleanser to remove dirt, oil, and makeup. This sets the stage for your products to work effectively. Morning or night, cleansing is non-negotiable.

Step 2: Toner – Prime the Skin

Once your face is squeaky clean, a toner swoops in to balance your skin’s PH and prep it for better absorption of active ingredients. Think of toner as the primer. If you’re dealing with dryness, go for a hydrating toner. Oily or acne-prone? A clarifying toner is your BFF.

Step 3: Essence – Hydration First

Essences may feel like a luxury, but they’re the hydration MVPs. Packed with lightweight moisture and active ingredients, they soften the skin and make it more receptive to heavier treatments. If you’re short on time, you can skip it—but if you’re in it to win it, don’t skimp here.

Step 4: Treatments – The Problem-Solvers

For night-time, an occasional overnight mask can provide an extra boost of hydration or repair. Not essential for everyone, but a nice treat for your skin when needed, especially during these chillier months.

PS: the minimalist approach: less is more

For those who like to keep things simple, a minimalist routine of three steps—cleanser, moisturiser, and sunscreen—is perfectly effective. The key is consistency. High-quality, multi-tasking products can also save time and shelf space.
