The Handbook
The Handbook

It’s the first week of October which can only mean one thing – Paul Hollywood is lucratively giving out his famous handshake on Bake Off…oh, and it’s National Cake Week! Founded by Lynn Hill in 2011, it’s a time to let the sweet tooth come out to play, if only for a week, and indulge at some of our favourite cake haunts.

Cake week, we’ll never dessert you…

Palm Vaults

If Wes Anderson owned a cafe, the chances are it would look like this! Palm Vaults in Hackney screams pastel shades and wicker chairs and greenery. Their menu is coloured with scrumptious vegan offerings on pretty plates, and lattes in opulent shades that will have you sipping for the ‘gram. The most important part? Cakes. As pictured, the cakes are as quirky as the interior, donning satirical sayings and popping up in pastel shades; you can order them in full online or visit the store.

Where: 411 Mare Street, Hackney, E8 1HY

Violet Cakes

A certain newly-wed royal couple are huge fans of Violet Cakes; to the point where they asked owner Claire Ptak to create the cake for the royal wedding – no kidding! It’s an ideal spot to pick up an American-style bake, that started as a market stall on Broadway Market. Cakes are baked with organic and low intervention ingredients, and we can confirm they taste delicious!

Maitre Choux

Hands up if you fancy an eclair, choux or chouquette baked fresh every morning by three Michelin Star pastry chef Joakim Prat?! Yep, us two and Maitre Choux is where it’s at. As the only choux pastry specialist patisserie in the world, the venue serves the most eye-catching of eclairs, and a range regularly updated to reflect the season.

Peggy Porschen

Peggy Porschen has seen many an influencer adorn its exterior to pose for a quick insta-snap. The enticing location has an outside as pink as the icing on the cakes, and a vibrancy like no other that goes hand in hand with chilled Champagne and a slice of something sugary. Having just launched their Pumpkins and Pearls Autumn Collection, it’s the perfect time to indulge! Be it a golden apple and chai cake to diamantes and pearls skulls cookies, there’s enough to entice your taste buds.

Crumbs and Doilies

For cupcakes galore and the occasional unicorn cake, Crumbs and Doilies are the one for you. Despite the incredulous colours, artificial flavours or additives are never used in the cakes, with all cakes being baked exclusively with the very best natural ingredients available, including organic free range eggs, Lescure AOC butter, Organic Doves Farm flour, Tate & Lyle sugars and Callebaut chocolate and cocoa.
