The Handbook
The Handbook

January really is just a miserable month isn’t it? The Christmas lights are switched off and in the harsh light of day you realise just what damage those mince pies have done. Then you get back to the office you log into your bank account (because nobody needs that terror on their holiday) and oh, great, you have no money  because it all went on the ‘spirit’ (gin we’re looking at you) of Christmas. It’s not all that bad though, because the wonderful restaurants and bars of London have come together with some great offers meaning you can still go out and banish the January blues without drawing out your last £10 note. Hurrah!

Wright Brothers Soho Oyster House

£1 Oyster Happy Hour

Oysters – they’re rather like Marmite aren’t they? Well here at The Handbook we are luckily big oyster fans and not just because they are decadent and an aphrodisiac…. no we also love them because they are full of goodness, packed with vitamins, minerals and good fats – which is exactly what we need after the Christmas splurge. What’s even better news though is that the Wright Brothers restaurants have a £1 oyster happy hour every day between 3pm and 6pm, so you can be fancy, eat well and hopefully not hit your overdraft. All round success.

50% Off All Food

So you said you’d take your new crush on a date and you’d pay and then you look at your bank balance and it’s laughing at you. You can almost hear it cry ‘you want to take them out to impress them, nope not this month oh and remember you haven’t paid your rent yet.’ Those nasty bank balances. Well fear not because St James restaurant, Boulestin, is here to save the day. They have an amazing 50% off food throughout January – you’ll need to book in advance on the phone quoting, ‘Boulestin 50’ and you can check out the other T&Cs online. What it does mean though is that you can take your date out and not have to scrimp. Ideal.

A Whole Jerk Chicken for £12

In need of a bit of Caribbean warmth? Sadly we can’t promise the heat of the sun but we can promise the warmth of jerk chicken. Jamaican restaurant Rudie’s are making every Monday in January ‘Jerk Monday’ with deals on their jerk chicken – £12 for a whole bird and £6.75 for a half. Grab a group of mates and head to Dalston to spice up your 2016.

Princess Victoria

Cut Price Wines

Dry January makes a pretty miserable month all the more so, so if you haven’t jumped on the wagon swap dry January for a dry white. Princess Victoria in White City are doing Wine Shop Mondays; anything from rare and natural to fortified and sparkling can be enjoyed at wine shop prices. We reckon we’ll be particularly in need on Monday 18th January, known as Blue Monday, and the most depressing day of the year.

Pho & Bun

Vietnamese Burger and a Drink for £10

If you’re trying to watch what you eat a little bit this month then swap your fully loaded burger for a slightly lighter option: enter the bao bun. Pho & Bun in Shaftesbury Avenue have put their Vietnamese spin on the classic burger and are sandwiching 28 day aged beef in between squidgy steamed bao buns. Grab a burger and a drink for just £10 all month long.

Crab Tavern

Free Cocktails

Tuesdays are nothing days really aren’t they? Monday, well that’s the start of the week, Wednesday is the middle, Thursday is basically Friday and then it is free wheeling from their to the weekend. But Tuesday? It’s just a bit unnecessary. So let’s make it better, well for the ladies at least, because Crab Tavern are offering all ladies who order a main course between 5pm and 8pm free signature cocktails all night. Yes all night. We’re just not sure how acceptable it is to go into work hungover on a Wednesday.
