Unless you’ve spent the last month or so hiding under your bed in anticipation of Halloween, you’ll have noticed an influx of icy igloos popping up all over London. One is a novelty, but five and we’re spoilt for choice. So much so that you’re probably spending your lunch breaks figuring out which is the best to go to. So with that in mind we’ve compiled a list explaining the quirks and perks of each of the best.
The Sipping Room
What: The Sipping Rooms
Why: Gaze at the surrounding sky scrapers lit up like fairy lights, (or ogle the hottie in the next-door igloo, whichever floats your boat). With space for eight, the igloos offer the perfect excuse to snuggle up with your nearest and dearest under sheepskin throws. There’s also no reason to not keep yourself warm inside as well as out as The Sipping Room offers a delicious seasonal platter with pigs in blankets, Stilton and walnut tarts, plus aubergine sliders with winter slaw and wasabi mayonnaise.
Where: 16 Hertsmere Road, Canary Wharf, E14 4AX
What: Jimmy's Lodge
Why: Though it may be nestled on the bank of the Thames, Jimmy’s Lodge transports its visitors far from those murky waters. The atmosphere is akin to that of a mountain chalet resort and here you can enjoy private dining in one of the igloos, or join the communal dining in the rooftop refuge. Both areas are served with a winter grill and a hot cocktail bar that will have you feeling warm and tingly from your head to your toes.
Where: Southbank Centre, Belvedere Road, Southbank, SE1 8XX
Why: Forget Winter Wonderland, how about a winter playground? The Enchanted Forest, once the home to Fulham’s beach-side summer party, has now embraced a festive makeover swapping beach balls for snow balls and huts for igloos. From curling lanes to mini golf; enjoy an affordable evening with a bunch of mates. Whether you pile onto the fur covered sofas or bundle into a heated igloo, you’ll be set with the perfect entertainment for a winter evening.
Where: Winterland London, Wandsworth Bridge Road, Fulham, SW6 2TY
Coppa Club Tower Bridge
What: Coppa Club
Why: It’s all about the view; we dare you not to stare wide eyed from your igloo and marvel at the city sculptures looming high and dominating the sky. By the atmospheric lights of London bridge, have fun playing make-believe. Revel in the chilly experience from the warmth of your igloo and take comfort in the knowledge that you can appreciate all this without dressing like an Eskimo or fending off polar bears.
Where: 3 Three Quays Walk, Lower Thames Street, EC3R 6AH
Sliders Curling Club
What: Sliders Curling Club
Why: From the people who brought you the Rooftop Film Club, are now responsible for not only six rooftop curling lanes, but (you guessed it!) igloos for private dining. With lanes made from synthetic ice you can curl to your heart’s content, then enjoy the real thing in your cocktail when it’s delivered to your lane. But it’s the apres-curl that you’re looking forward to, retiring to the comfort of your igloo. Gorge yourself on sharing-boards of raclette, charcuterie and ‘Aspen fries’ seasoned with truffle, parmesan and rosemary. It’s time to stop dribbling and start planning.
Where: Level 8 Car park, Great Eastern Way, Stratford, E15 1XE
Why: If you’d rather be looking out rather than up, then the Aviary igloos are where you need to be. Rise above the hubbub of the busy London streets, feast on a three course festive dinner, and relax in an igloo at altitude. Snuggle down against the cold and experience some Scandi-style in the sky.
Where: 22 - 25 Finsbury Square, EC2A 1DX
