The long weekend you’ve been waiting for is finally here, and there’s lots to celebrate the first weekend of May.

Other than getting that extra day off, there are some exciting events on in London for Star Wars fans, foodies and festival goers. There are spring special pop-ups to explore, movies to watch and new food spots to visit in honour of the Mexican celebration, Cinco de Mayo that’s got all of London’s Mexican restaurants buzzing. If you’re one of the few people who haven’t booked your getaway out of London this weekend, here are our top picks of what to do to make the most of the May bank holiday weekend.

Attend the Eurosmash Festival

A day dedicated to all things Eurovision, this music festival has two stages with acts performing through the day. Euro legends like Jedward, who represented Ireland at Eurovision in 2011 and 2012, and the 1997 winner Katrina, will take to the stage. Plus, you can look forward to comedy acts, drag performances, game stands and food stalls serving everything from Swedish to Italian favourites.

Try Greek food at Vori

Vori will be serving a special set menu for Greek Orthodox Easter Sunday on 5th May. The most important date in the Greek calendar, Orthodox Easter is characterised by traditions and customs that date back centuries. Vori will be honouring these with staples such as slow-roasted joints of lamb and kid-goat, Mageiritsa (a thick soup made with lamb offal, onion & rice), Tsoureki (sweet bread) and, of course, the customary dyed eggs for smashing, all of which are served in homes and restaurants throughout Greece on this day.

Attend the Peckham Fringe Festival

Running for a third year, the Peckham Fringe Festival will host over twenty productions that showcase the work of emerging writers and performers. From Time Fly’s, a nostalgic 90s production, to Run Black Girl Run, the story of a Nigerian girl who attends a P.E. lesson that changes her life, the festival promises to showcase the talent of the community.

An all-asparagus celebration at German Gymnasium

White asparagus takes centre stage this weekend at German Gymnasium. Each stalk of the delicate vegetable is hand peeled by Chef Alex Thiel, such is the dedication to the ingredient and the menu pays tribute to the German celebration of the season, featuring classic dishes that incorporate the diva of spring that is white asparagus. Look forward to Spargelcremesuppe (creamy white asparagus soup), Spargel mit Hollandaise (white asparagus spears with piquant hollandaise and buttery new potatoes), BerlinerBuletten (pan-fried veal dumplings with white asparagus, cherry tomatoes and fresh green peas) and more on the menu.

Richmond Park’s Isabella Plantation

The world might be slowly getting over the Barbie phenomenon, but no one sent the memo to Richmond because the park is at its very pinkest at this time of the year. The Isabella Plantation, nestled amidst Richmond Park’s glorious woodlands, won’t be blushing for long, so this weekend is probably your best chance to catch the pink while you can.

Harvey Nichols spring feast

Harvey Nichols has a new spring menu that offers three elegantly plated courses served with a Mijenta Tequila cocktail. Dishes include truffle burrata with pea and white asparagus, chalk stream trout with sea kale and parsley sauce, and a layered honey sponge cake with lavender cream. Available at the Fifth Floor Cafe at Knightsbridge, it’s the perfect way to get a taste of spring this weekend.

Celebrate Star Wars Day

It’s that time of the year again when you get to say, “May the fourth be with you” to everyone you meet. Star Wars Day is a great excuse to binge-watch the saga without any judgement. Or, get your dose of Star Wars memorabilia at Disney100: The Exhibition at London ExCel; check out the Star Wars exhibit at Madame Tussauds and journey through iconic locations from the films including the incredible Millennium Falcon or go a step further in the fandom and attend a drag and cabaret celebration featuring all the iconic heroes and villains of the galaxy far, far away (or just at The Royal Vauxhall Tavern).

Worn by actors like Kevin Hart and JimmyAkingbola, House of Tayo is a fashion brand rooted in African heritage and contemporary elegance. Expect designs inspired by the rich tapestry of African culture and craftsmanship to create wearable, sustainable and modern pieces.  Based in Kigali, Rwanda, the brand is coming to London for a pop-up event at Espacio Gallery where you’ll get the chance to check out the collection firsthand.

Shakespeare under the sky

Sure, you might not be on a beach someone along the Mediterranean coast, but you can, however, pretend. And no one knows how to play pretend more than England’s national poet and playwright. In an adaptation of Twelfth Night, directer Owen Horsley[/profile-link (Henry VI: Rebellion, Wars of the Roses, Royal Shakespeare Company), brings a stellar cast together to perform Shakespeare’s comedy of mistaken identities that is set in the sun-soaked Mediterranean.

Celebrate Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo, an annual Mexican celebration on the 5th of May, is making waves in London this weekend. The Standard’s Mexican restaurant, Decimo is launching a Cinco de Mayo brunch menu which will include a merge of Spanish and Mexican cooking styles, spearheaded by Michelin-starred Chef Peter Sanchez-Iglesias. Enjoy views of the London skyline as you savour Baja California Fish Tacos,  Chilaquiles (fried corn tortillas, served with salsa verde, grated manchego cheese and fried eggs), Huevos Rancheros (torched wheat tortilla, fried eggs, black beans and salsa rojo made from red serrano chili and red tomatoes) and more delicious Mexican flavours.
