The Men’s Italian Fashion Trend Is The Slickest Way To Do Summer Dressing

16th August 2023 | By Astrid Carter

Womenswear has had “the wrong shoe theory” and “tomato girl summer” but what about the men when it comes to trends going viral? This summer we’re calling it and it’s all about the “Italian Summer”.

Think linen grandad shirts unbuttoned to the chest, vintage style pastels, sharp tailoring in double-breasted shapes and chic pinstripe and fine Italian accessories by way of leather loafers and dandyish cravats.

A good point of reference for this Italian-inspired look would be pop star Jacques Dutronc (we know he’s French but you get the idea) or, more recently, Alex Turner, frontman and professional style chameleon, whose 2023 Arctic Monkeys tour was littered with some iconic Italian fashion-inspired looks.

‌Whilst we may be well into August, this is a look that will carry you through to autumn easily. In fact, it’s probably more suited to the cooler months thanks to its reliance on layering and substantial pieces – no one wants to be wearing a full suit in a London heatwave.

And whilst the likes of Alex pull off the “full look” with aplomb like any self-respecting rock star, taking the pieces individually and working them into an existing capsule wardrobe feels a little more realistic.

Scroll on to shop some of our favourite pieces leaning into this season’s slickest menswear look…

Sharp Tailoring

For a high/low approach to dressing, team a pinstripe suit tailored with a more relaxed denim button-down.

For something for the day that still rides that Italian gentleman wave, we love Cabourn’s pullover white shirt without buttons paired with a pair of tapered pleated trousers, finished off with loafers, a gold chain and signet ring, naturally.

The Artic Monkeys frontman has been spotted in this trad Italian brand GianMarco Venturi. It’s quite hard to get your hands on in the UK but dupes of their classic grandad shirt can be found at the likes of M&S, Folk and Uniqlo.

Pair a Paisley print cravat with a denim shirt for a modern riff on gentleman dressing or add edge to a classic white linen shirt with Umara’s flat gold chain. You also can’t go wrong with a pair of great leather loafers. This Sandro pair is erring into Cuban heels territory but we’re feeling it.

TOMBOLO

Add some vintage-inspired colour to your summer wardrobe with pale shades and soft pastels. We love the co-ords from another Turner-approved brand, Tombolo.
