This year’s slate of films on Netflix has been particularly exciting, with projects like Julia RobertsLeave the World Behind and the Michael Fassbender thriller The Killer on our radar. Another we can’t wait to see is the upcoming drama, Nyad.

Starring Jodie Foster, Anette Bening and Rhys Ifans, the film based on the true story of a sixty-four-year-old marathon swimmer attempting to make the audacious feat of swimming from Cuba to Florida. But 100 miles of open ocean aren’t the only obstacle in her way- she must brave shark-infested waters without a shark cage to reach her goal…

There have been a few films about feats in the water from the streaming giant of late, including last year’s inspiring refugee drama The Swimmers, and True Spirit, about a 16-year-old sailing the world. Nyad is a look at the life of Diana Nyad – played by Annette Bening, who you’ll know from her Oscar-nominated roles in American Beauty and The Kids Are All Right – an author and long-distance swimmer from New York who gained attention for her marathon swims in the 1970s swimming around Manhattan and from The Bahamas to Florida.

By 2010, Nyad was in her sixties and still chasing her most difficult ambition: swim from Cuba to Key West, Florida. The film is set to touch on her previous failed attempts through the decades before she finally made the swim in 2013.

As the Netflix synopsis for Nyad notes, it’s the “Everest of swims”…executing a 53-hour, 110-mile swim from Cuba to Florida, through the dangerous open ocean, without a shark cage.”

Joining her on her aquatic mission is her loyal friend Bonnie Stoll, played by Hollywood legend Jodie Foster, who you can also catch in the long-awaited fourth season of True Detective later this year.

With Diana swimming and Bonnie escorting her by boat, the two attempt a journey that would attract the world’s attention, with even President Barack Obama giving his support.

Also in the cast is Rhys Ifans (House of the Dragon), portraying the role of Diana’s chief navigator for the attempt, and Anna Harriette Pittman (A Savannah Haunting) as a teenage Diana. The film is based on Diana Nyad’s autobiography Find a Way, directed by Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi – the same duo behind the exhilaratingly tense climbing documentary Free Solo.

There’s no release date for Nyad yet, but Netflix will likely confirm details later in the year.
