From sparkling crystals to tulle bows and jewel embellishments, fun tights and socks are having a moment right now. Here’s how to work the micro trend into all your festive looks without looking like you’ve dressed for a children’s party.

A pair of festive tights or socks could be the secret weapon to elevating all your Christmas looks. They are everywhere right now, no thanks to the crystal-encrusted and lace Gucci logo tights that have been doing the rounds on Instagram. Gucci’s offerings are eye-wateringly expensive – potentially more expensive than your whole outfit and come with a high ladder probability warning – but there are plenty of affordable options that make dipping your toe into the trend easy.

PARTY SOCKS

When it comes to socks, there are plenty of styles to choose from. The look definitely plays more into cutesy rather than elegant, like a polka dot sheer tight or glittered fishnet, pairing perfectly with this season’s OTT platform heels.

We love Topshops’s charcoal Glitter Socks with a simple black velvet platform, or FreePeople’s Diamonds & Pearls Sheer Socks paired with an ‘80s-inspired ruffled taffeta dress and jewel-encrusted pumps – very Simone Rocha.

TIGHTS

On the high street, you can’t go wrong with M&S hosiery. Their Sparkle Fishnet Tights will add a sexy edge to a black tuxedo dress and black patent courts – very Carine Roitfeld. While FreePeople’s Glitter Fishnet Tights are a powder pink alternative to the usual dark shades. Wear with a tulle baby doll dress for a fun, frivolous party look.

Dedicated tights brand Calzedonia has really upped its party game this season with a whole range dedicated to tinsel-esque tights. Choose from sheer pairs peppered with sweet velvet bows, gold star-adorned tights or the unashamedly Christmassy 20-denier version scribbled with shiny glitter effect and flocked with quotes from “A Christmas Carol”.

Calzedonia’s diamanté fishnet leggings bridge the gap between tights and something a little more substantial. Pair with a long line velvet blazer and sky-high platforms this party season.

There is something to be said for a heel with the fun socks or tights trend – it just works better and keeps it from looking too children’s party. If you do want to forgo heels this party season, a frilly ankle sock – or FreePeople’s sweet feather-trimmed pair – can look cool and sit on just the right side of quirky with this season’s favourite chunky loafer.

Dance-floor-ready feet and toasty toes? It’s a win win.
