Pleated Lampshades

Very old-school, yet so very now, these expertly made pleated lampshades are having a style moment. Although, who’s to say they ever disappeared, given their timeless appeal and intricate level of craftsmanship. We’ve curated our top finds below…

This vintage style of lighting has seen a recent resurgence thanks to our love of cottage-core or grandmillennial style aka granny chic. It’s a return to all things cosy, with a dose of chintz; a far cry from the simplistic all-white lamps also currently trending. The gathered lampshade is typically made from rich velvet or silk, which manages to softly diffuse light across a room. You’ll find most are hand-crafted in an intricate double pinch design or a more striking box pleat, often seen at Alice Palmer & Co.

At Graham & Green each shade is handmade on an iron frame using the traditional Ikat dying techniques that originated in Indonesia to create an entirely unique print. Similarly, Samarkand Design worked with a group of women in Assam, North Eastern India, to produce their Assam Collection made from hand-woven cotton. Other styles have been crafted using vintage sari silks in everything from florals to paisley prints. Think Laura Ashley and you’re on the right track; go all out with textures and colours. One lamp is never enough, like cushions, the more you have, the cosier the home.
