Say Nothing Is An Enthralling New Drama Set During The Troubles
Looking for a new historical drama to sink into? Say Nothing, a series set in Northern Ireland during The Troubles, is set to arrive on Disney+ this month on 14th November. It follows a group of characters and their lives in Belfast throughout the 70s, 80s and 90s, and how they deal with the political and social turmoil of the time, focusing in particular on the IRA. What is Say Nothing about?
Based on the book Say Nothing: A True Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland by Patrick Radden Keefe, the series joins other must-watch FX shows on Disney+ this year, like The Bear and Shogun. It begins in the 1970s, opening with the infamous disappearance of Jean McConville, a mother of ten who was abducted from her home in Belfast and “disappeared”- with her body never being found. Lola Petticrew (Tuesday) plays Dolours Price, a member of the Irish Republican Army, and how she ended up joining the moment in her youth. Meanwhile, actress Maxine Peake (Black Mirror) portrays an older Dolours as she recounts her story in a series of interviews.
Say Nothing follows Dolours and her sister Marian (Hazel Droupe) as they become increasingly involved in IRA activities, and aims to create an unflinching and absorbing portrait of the time. Also featured in the series are Anthony Boyle (Masters of the Air) as IRA member Brendan Hughes, and Josh Finan (The Responder) as Irish Republican and Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams. In an interview with Vanity Fair, creator Josh Zetumer said that the show is “about both the romance of radical politics and the cost of those politics—about young people who want to change the world and think that violence is the only way to do it.”
The official trailer for the series showcases Say Nothing’s stylish look and portrayal of the early years of Dolours’ life, but it also gives a glimpse of how the violence of those decades came at a cost for those living through it. All nine episodes of the limited series will be available to stream when the show is released on 14th November on Disney+ in the UK.
