The First Look At Sense And Sensibility Starring Daisy Edgar-Jones Is Here
Austen fans unite: the author’s classic novel, Sense and Sensibility, is getting a new adaptation this year, and is set to star Daisy Edgar-Jones in the lead role. Directed by Georgia Oakley, it will retell the much-loved story that follows the lives of the Dashwood sisters on the big screen. Here’s everything we know so far:
What is Sense and Sensibility about?
Austen’s first novel, Sense and Sensibility, was originally published anonymously (with the author byline “by a lady”) and, like her other works, has become one of English literature’s greatest classics.
It’s not the first time the book has been adapted, with probably the most famous version being the one that stars Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet from the 90s. Daisy, who broke out with Normal People and Twisters, will play the central role of Elinor Dashwood, one of the novel’s main protagonists. The 1811 novel takes place across several years in the late 1700s, with the Dashwood sisters falling into destitution following the death of their father.

Two of the sisters represent “sense” and “sensibility”, and throughout the narrative, their contrasting styles are explored in their lives and loves. They discover that relationships aren’t easy, and the two women fall for different men: Edward Ferrars and John Willoughby. Both hope to marry into financial security to escape their difficult living conditions. As with many of Austen’s works, the novel tackles themes like what it means to be a woman, as well as love and self-discovery.
What the trailer tells us
The trailer establishes this as a sweeping, visually stunning period piece, with Daisy Edgar-Jones at the centre of the action. The footage offers plenty of longing and even a dash of mystery, suggesting director Georgia Oakley has leaned into the novel’s emotional intensity as well as its romantic drama.
Based on the teaser, Oakley appears to have helmed a faithful take on Austen’s debut novel, complete with sweeping shots and longing glances. We were also given a closer look at the ensemble cast, which includes George MacKay, Caitríona Balfe, Frank Dillane and Fiona Shaw. The overall tone positions the film as a classically crafted Austen adaptation in the mould of Working Title’s earlier period successes, rather than a revisionist or modernised reimagining.

Daisy first shared the news on her Instagram last June, so to say this release has been hotly anticipated is an understatement. Naturally, fans have wasted no time in expressing their excitement, with Daisy’s comment section being flooded with excited Instagram users.

When does it release?
Sense and Sensibility is scheduled to be released in cinemas this Autumn, with the date set for September 25th 2026, so make sure to mark your calendars!
