There’s something about needing to book ‘somewhere nice’ for a special occasion dinner that makes your mind go completely blank. So, as a team of London foodie experts, we thought we’d share our go-to spots for you to bookmark for that next birthday, anniversary or event – here’s The Handbook Team’s top picks.

Lucky Cat Bishopsgate

Sydney, Social Media Manager

Why I rate it: If you’re after unbeatable views of London, this is the place. As the city’s (now) highest restaurant, the skyline alone is worth the visit—but the experience doesn’t stop there. Everything, from the service to the food, lives up to the breathtaking setting. From the moment you step inside, you know you’re in for something special.

The last special occasion I celebrated there: Opening night! I was lucky enough to be one of the first through the doors, and let’s just say—it blew me away.

The must-order menu item: For food, the grilled miso salmon is a standout—perfectly cooked with rich umami depth. The sushi selection is also not to be missed, with beautifully fresh, melt-in-the-mouth bites. For drinks, the Sakura Spritz is a must-try. Hands down one of the best non-alcoholic cocktails I’ve ever had, it’s a refreshing blend of cherry blossom, lychee, ginger, and rosehip. I could have easily had 10 in one sitting.

Akoko

Patrick, Editorial Assistant

Why you rate it: A special occasion means license to try something you never normally would – a tasting menu is great for exploration and culinary adventure.

The last special occasion you celebrated there: It was within a couple of months of moving to London, so let’s say moving to a new city.

The must-order menu item: As a changing tasting menu this doesn’t necessarily apply, but their jollof rice course, which comes with either lamb or octopus (I had octopus) might be the best thing I’ve eaten.

The overall ‘vibe’/feel: This is very laid-back for Michelin-star dining. The wait staff all incredibly chic and friendly, and the decor is cool, West Africa-meets-Scandinavia.

Claridge’s

Astrid, Contributing Fashion & Lifestyle Editor

Why you rate it: There are so many new openings and innovative restaurants in London but, for me, nowhere feels special quite like Claridge’s does. From the moment you walk through the iconic Art Deco doors to post-dinner drinks in Le Fumoir, that iconic Christmas tree to London’s cheeriest doormen, Claridge’s just has a certain magic about it.

The last special occasion you celebrated there: My mum and her twin sisters’ joint 70th who were made to feel like absolute queens.

The must-order menu item: The Lobster Wellington to share and then a Classic Champagne cocktail with brandy and a sugar cube in the bar afterwards.

The overall ‘vibe’/feel: Utter opulence, old school charm but without the stuffy service.

Sticks’n’Sushi

Caitlin, Client Account Manager

The last special occasion you celebrated there: I love Sticks’n’Sushi because you always know you’re getting high-quality sushi in a fun setting. Plus, with a menu that caters to both sushi lovers and those who prefer something different, there’s always something for everyone. The last time I went was for a friend’s birthday, and it was the perfect choice. The atmosphere is lively yet polished, making it an ideal spot to kick off a special night out.

The must-order menu item: My favourite is the Mixed Emotions Set that gives you the perfect mix of everything- between Edamame, crab croquettes, and a range of rolls, sashimi, and nigiri. You get a portion that will leave you more than satisfied without breaking the bank.

The overall ‘vibe’/feel: Chic yet relaxed, with a mix of minimalist Nordic design and warm Japanese hospitality. It’s stylish but not pretentious, just the right balance of cool and inviting.

Evelyn’s Table

Natasha, Digital Editor

Why you rate it: Tucked away beneath an unsuspecting pub, if you’re looking for a place that feels like a well-kept foodie insider secret, Evelyn’s is the place to go. The food is phenomenal and the chef’s table setup means that the chefs talk you through each course.

The last special occasion you celebrated there: Celebrating my new role at The Handbook, while my partner was returning to study, so a double celebration!

The must-order menu item: It’s a set menu set-up, so everyone gets the same thing. I oped for the 5 course option with the matching wine pairing. The standout from our menu was definitely the Ike Jime trouet with spoked pine and turnips.

The overall ‘vibe’/feel: The room is intimate and well-finished with an exclusive ‘if you know, you know’ feel.

Scarfes Bar

Andrea, Food, Culture & Lifestyle Writer

The last special occasion you celebrated there: A friend’s reunion.

The must-order menu item: We made a meal out of the bar snacks (which are far beyond your regular crisps, olives, peanuts). Must-tries are the roast striploin and the cheddar and chorizo croquettes.

The overall ‘vibe’/feel: A bar with a lot of personality. It’s the kind of place you’d dress up to visit but you also end up feeling like you’re in your grandparent’s living room – comfy, chic, sink into an armchair vibes. There’s live jazz every day here so if conversation dries up, you can just start singing along to the music.

Chez Bruce

Robyn, Managing Director

Why you rate it: Who doesn’t love a Michelin-starred restaurant within walking distance of their house, with an affordable £85 for a 3-course menu? I have spent many a special meal with people I love at Chez Bruce and it never, ever disappoints.

The last occasion you celebrated there: Toasting my husband’s new job offer. Although he’s been in his role a while now so it’s time for a revisit!

The must-order menu item: I’m obsessed with the spiced fish samosa to start.

The overall ‘vibe’/feel: Think understated, chic French bistro. White tablecloths, extensive wine cellar and great cuisine combinations. Owner Bruce Pool is often seen in the restaurant visiting and thanking guests for their custom, which is a super nice touch.

Why you rate it: It was my first time going out for lobster so it was really special. The food was absolutely delicious and the restaurant was luxe yet relaxing.

The last special occasion you celebrated there: After my first day of work my boyfriend took me to the Threadneedle Street restaurant as a congratulations.

The must-order menu item: The lobster (obviously) – we had ours half-grilled, half-steamed. Their burger was also really really good.
