Colin Farrell Leads Genre Bending New Detective Thriller Sugar On Apple TV+
With shows like Criminal Record, Constellation and Masters of the Air, Apple TV+ has gotten off to a flying start in the streaming world this year- and the streamer has just lifted the veil on one our most anticipated TV projects for 2024. Sugar, a new detective drama starring True Detective and The Banshees of Inisherin star Colin Farrell, was announced last year, but until now we had very few details. The enigmatic series will see Farrell play a private detective and looks like it’ll be an essential addition to your watchlist.
What is Sugar about?
Farrell stars as John Sugar, a seasoned and skilled private detective, who despite his successes in investigative work, suffers from his own “personal demons”. He’s drawn into the dark underbelly of Los Angeles, and Apple’s series seems to be leaning into the classic noir hardboiled detective story, as Sugar is called upon to investigate a high profile case in the city. The granddaughter of a legendary Hollywood producer, Johnathan Siegel, has vanished, and Sugar sets out on on an investigation. The eight part series will “bend genres” as it puts a contemporary spin on detective stories, and the first look images and trailer certainly look as stylish as True Detective, in which Farrell also played an investigator in the show’s second season.
As his investigation unfolds, Sugar becomes increasingly determined to find the missing Olivia Siegel, but will also uncover the family’s dark secrets, some long buried. The first trailer is only a brief glimpse of what to expect, but teases a lot: “Out here, I’m one of the good guys” says Sugar, indicating his more roguish and dangerous nature, “but good and bad can be in the eye of the beholder.” With a cover of California Dreamin’ playing in the background, we see Sugar meeting the elderly Siegel: “They told me that you do one thing and one thing only: you find the missing.” The stakes rise as Sugar gets more and more consumed by his work, desperately trying to find Olivia and possibly losing his grip on reality. But you’ll have to tune in to see just how far he’ll go.

The series will also star Kirby Howell-Baptiste (Killing Eve), Dennis Boutsikaris (Better Call Saul) and Amy Ryan (The Wire) alongside Sydney Chandler (Don’t Worry Darling), Miguel Sandoval (The Diplomat), Jason Butler Harner (The Handmaid’s Tale), and Breaking Bad star Anna Gunn.
