2024 has a lot in store for fans of detective TV shows, with HBO’s True Detective returning in January, and new series like Sugar and The Jetty. Criminal Record, coming to Apple TV+ early next year, sees Doctor Who star Peter Capalditry his hand at sleuthing, playing a veteran, brilliant detective drawn into a new and high-profile case.

Teaming up with a younger, less experienced but still whip-smart investigator (played by The Good Wife actress Cush Jumbo), he must reckon with his past as the pair investigate a particularly intense murder case.

What is Criminal Record about?

Detective Chief Inspector Daniel Hegarty (Capaldi) is a well-connected, seasoned detective and respected in his field. Nearing retirement, he’s determined to ensure his legacy as a police officer- so when an old and highly publicised murder case in London is reopened, he grabs it with both hands.

Meanwhile, a young up-and-comer, Detective Sgt June Lenker (Jumbo) is making a name for herself, and also takes up the case, as both are contacted by an anonymous phone call. But rather easily working together, the two are set on a collision course as they clash over methods and how exactly to investigate the case, with Daniel disapproving of June and she in return sceptical of him.

‌What else do we know?

‌Apple TV+’s synopsis of Criminal Record describes the show as being a “powerful, character-driven drama” set in London, which has themes of “race, institutional failure and the quest to find common ground in a polarised Britain.”

Throughout the eight-part series, both detectives are put to the test as they race to find clues and the real truth behind a case that’s been unsolved for years. There’s no trailer that’s been released yet, but some first-look images give a glimpse of our main characters, with Capaldi bringing DCI Hegarty to life with his trademark frown, and Jumbo’s Detective Sgt Lenker apparently interrogating a suspect about the case.

Who else stars and is there a release date?

‌Alongside the top billings of Capaldi and Jumbo, Criminal Record also stars Charlie Creed-Miles (King Arthur), Stephen Campbell Moore (Downton Abbey), Dionne Brown (The Walk-In). Zoë Wanamaker (Shadow and Bone), Rasaq Kukoyi (Andor) and Cathy Tyson (Help). It’s set to start on Apple TV+ on 12th January, with the first two episodes set to premiere together, with the rest airing weekly.
