jacket

It’s getting chilly out there, but not every day calls for a huge duvet coat. We’re in the UK, not the Canadian mountains, so what are the alternatives? Thankfully outerwear commanded those designer runways, leaving us with a multitude to choose from. From Isabel Marant’s blue bomber to the Acne Studios shearling flying jacket or the Alexander McQueen biker, catwalk inspo is seriously strong. These are the top trends we’ll be embracing…

The Biker

Obviously leather is the fabric du jour, but the classic moto has never truly been out of fashion. Yes, it’s had contemporary tweaks, however the style remains true to its origins. Designed by Irving Schott back in 1928, the motorcycle jacket has gone on to become one of the most iconic pieces within our wardrobe. Once solely favoured by movie stars, rock stars and riders, today it’s an everyday part of our capsule wardrobe worn by everyone from fashion influencers to financiers.

Thanks in part to this season’s creations from Alexander McQueen, Alaia, Dior and Marni, the bad ass biker chick is making her mark. She was present in the late noughties, but this time round her return is grown up, more lived in and perfectly timed with the renewed love for the Balenciaga moto bag. So put the pedal to the metal and make for All Saints for the coolest selection around.

The Bomber

Another trend that’s become a sartorial staple is the MA-1 bomber jacket. Originally developed by Dobbs Industries for the US Air Force and Navy fighter pilots, it’s been reimagined through the decades for the style-conscious. We dappled with the look a few years back, but this season it’s returned with a vengeance: bigger, bolder and very statement-y. If you’re after that stamp of cool, then this is it. Super-sized and bold at Prada, The Frankie Shop and Isabel Marant; leather at Loewe and florals at Elie Saab. Historically nylon with synthetic Holofill quilting and that iconic orange lining, we can now opt for versions similar or go for luxe leather, bright colours or emboldened patterns.

The Aviator

Top Gun: Maverick may be a box office smash, but it was his jacket that hit fashion heights on the AW22 catwalks. Derived from military attire, this tough, yet snuggly number has unisex vibes and looks even better when worn oversized. Those of you looking for the same cosiness as you’d get from your puffer coat, will love the rich layers of shearling and leather. Prada mixed the hard-wearing jacket with slip skirts for a softer feel; Sacai went for old Hollywood glamour with a dramatic faux-shearling collar and a slick of red lippie thanks to make-up artist, Diana Kendal. Saint + Sofia, Topshop and Massimo Dutti have all created their own iterations, ready for us to brave the winter in style.
