What’s better than watching TV shows? Talking about TV shows. Whether it’s excitedly discussing the latest episode of House of Dragon and theorising what comes next, happily reminiscing about your favourite bits of Blackadder, or debating the ending of Lost, we might spend more time chatting about television than actually watching it. If you want to flick something fun on to listen to while on a commute or don’t have a friend who loves the same series as you, you can always listen to a podcast.
There are absolutely loads out there, so we’ve picked a few good ones to get stuck into. Some are hosted by fans, while others feature actors and crew who share anecdotes or extra nuggets of info, so that you can get the most out of your favourite series.
The Crown Official Podcast
The fifth season of The Crown debuted just last week, so we’re kicking off this list with the show’s official podcast. The pod is a companion to the show, allowing for a deeper dive into the stories and insight into how each episode comes about. It’s been ongoing since the third season of the show, examining episode by episode what exactly happened to the characters and where they might be going next. You’ll hear the inspirations behind the storylines including how they were adapted from real events, and how each new set of cast members influence how the royals are portrayed on screen. Guests on the show have included series creator Peter Morgan, as well as Helena Bonham Carter, Imelda Staunton and Dominic West.
Office Ladies and The Office Deep Dive
Ever since the US version of The Office ended close to 10 years ago, the show has continued to be one of the most popular sitcoms around, with a keen following in Britain as well as across the pond. There are a few podcasts about the show, with the biggest being Office Ladies, featuring Jenna Fisher, who played Pam, and Angela Kinsley, who played Angela. The pair, best friends in real life, sit down and discuss every single episode of The Office, one by one. It’s a great way to unwind and learn more about the acclaimed series, from two people who were there, and find out how each episode was made. There’s also The Office Deep Dive, which is hosted by Brian Baumgartner, who played Kevin. This show is an expansion of his earlier “An Oral History of the Office”, and sees Brian dive into the show’s formation and early years, struggles with TV execs and behind-the-scenes anecdotes, joined by different guests each episode.
There are actually several different Obsessed With Podcasts, available through the BBC and each of which discusses some of the BBC’s most popular shows. There’s one about Killing Eve, which sees hosts Naomi and Zing talk about each episode of the Jodie Comer and Sarah Oh starring series, with their favourite moments and thoughts on the meaning behind each instalment, one on Peaky Blinders featuring Darren Harriot and Lloyd Griffith discuss every episode of the crime show, as well as plenty others on shows like I May Destroy You, Line of Duty, SAS Rogue Heroes, Normal People and more.
Breaking Bad Insider Podcast and Better Call Saul Insider Podcast
Two of the best TV shows of the 21st century, Breaking Bad and its prequel series Better Call Saul, have podcasts devoted to them that reveal how both shows were created and what happens in each episode. The Breaking Bad Insider Podcast, which ran from 2009 to 2013, dissected the journey of Walter White from chemistry teacher to ruthless drug kingpin, with plenty of interviews from the show’s stars like Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul and Anna Gunn, and the show’s head writer Vince Gilligan. The Better Call Saul insider podcast meanwhile came to an end earlier this year with the final episode of the TV show, following Jimmy McGill’s transformation into sleazy lawyer Saul Goodman, as well as how the show managed to come out of the shadow of its predecessor and become its own thing, with Bob Odenkirk, Rhea Seehorn and creator Peter Gould all featuring.
Every Outfit (Sex and the City)
Every Outfit was born out of an Instagram account dedicated to all the best outfits and fashion choices on Sex and the City and has since evolved into a general culture discussion podcast, but it still has regular episodes dedicated to the hugely popular HBO series. Hosts Chelsea Fairless and Lauren Garroni dissect different episodes of the show, sometimes by fan request, and the outfits and lives of Carrie, Charlotte, Samantha and Miranda. There are also several episodes dedicated to the series’ follow up And Just Like That…, so there is plenty of Sex and The City material to get stuck into. Other episodes’ fewer SATC-focused are still great listens, discussing fashion and pop culture, and will help pass the hours away.
