Netflix’s New Scandinavian Thriller The Glass Dome Is One To Watch
One of the things that Netflix has become talented at is snapping up foreign language dramas across the globe and making them available for us all to enjoy. If you love the appealing allure of a Scandi-thriller, then the streamer’s new show The Glass Dome, which releases next month, is just the drama you need to check out.
It follows an investigation into a missing girl in a small town in Sweden, as the investigator assigned to the case (Léonie Vincent) delves into her own past. Here’s everything you need to know:
What is The Glass Dome about?
Most Nordic Noir shows follow similar beats: a world-weary investigator, missing or murdered victims, and muted colours. Netflix’s The Glass Dome does look like it hits some of these beats, sure, but what makes it a draw is the fact it’s geared up to tell a personal story about a woman reckoning with past traumas. It all centres on Lejla (Vincent), a criminologist with some success in her field. She returns home to her small Swedish town when she’s informed of the death of a relative, and her arrival in the town seems to bring back some bad memories. Asked to meet a friend of hers, she arrives to find that her friend’s daughter has vanished without a trace- and Lejla suspects abduction.
The reason for her quick conclusion is that the missing person’s case reminds her of past traumas in her life. As a young girl, Lejla was taken by a kidnapper and forced to live inside a glass box until she was eventually able to escape. The rest of the town has just as long a memory- we see her called “girl in the box”, and after accusations are made that she knows something, another character comments that she’s “been through a lot of stuff that still affects her today.” She’s convinced that the girl she’s trying to find has been taken by the same person and also made to remain inside a box. How she will find the missing and stop whoever’s behind it from doing it again, you’ll have to see.
