Greta Lee Stars In Claustrophobic Thriller The Last House
Imagine suddenly being sealed inside your home with no way out for months on end, and simultaneously having unseen forces threatening to tear your family apart. That’s the creepy premise of new Netflix thriller The Last House, which stars Past Lives’ Greta Lee and The Secret Agent’s Wagner Moura as the couple at the centre of the story. Here’s what we know so far:
What is The Last House about?
The Last House centres on Riley (Greta Lee) and Jason (Wagner Moura), a couple living a very ordinary suburban life in a normal neighbourhood with their two children. But one fateful morning, everything changes when the family discover they are unable to leave their house. Doors inexplicably refuse to open, windows can’t be broken to escape through, and every other feasible way to get out has somehow been sealed shut by an invisible force. There’s also suddenly very stormy weather swirling around the building. They have no idea what’s going on, and have no choice but to try and hunker down.
As the days pass, their food, water and electricity begin running dangerously low, while panic gradually sets in amongst all of them. Riley and Jason are desperate to keep their kids safe and calm, but inside with no explanation and no way of contacting the outside world, they have to simply try to survive. Yet the longer they’re confined, the more they begin to suspect that whatever is keeping them imprisoned- whether human or something else- isn’t just outside the house, but may also be watching them. There’s also the issue of their street becoming overgrown and rewilded, with bears and other dangerous animals seen roaming freely.
According to the film’s synopsis and the trailer, their predicament lasts weeks, then months, and before they know it, years, as they reach a shocking 1000 days. According to the film’s director Louis Leterrier, the film explores not only the fear of confinement but also the pressures that emerge when a family is pushed to its absolute breaking point. And, considering it seems like the rest of the world is trapped too, must surely be something of a metaphor for COVID?
Who’s in the cast?
The most exciting element is surely the film’s lead pairing: both Greta Lee and Wagner Moura were nominated for acting Oscars for their roles in critically acclaimed dramas. Aside from them, the cast largely seems to be unknowns, with Gabriel Barbosa, Emma Ho and Noah Alexander Sosnowski playing the family’s children.
When does it release?
The good news is you don’t have long to wait until you can stream this hotly anticipated new release, with The Last House set to premiere globally on Netflix on 7 August 2026.
